An eye witness who pleaded anonymity has explained how the Nobel Laurel ,Prof. Wole Soyinka led the Police to effect the arrest of a herdsman identified as Awwalu after allegedly grazing his herds on his Ijegba Estate in Abeokuta.
The eye witness told PLATFORM TIMES that three of 23 herds strayed into the compound of the Estate which is located around Ajangboun in Kemta-Idi-Aba in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun state .
One of Soyinka’s children, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka had in statement issued on Wednesday confirmed the incident .
He however refuted the rumour following a viral video clip on the social media that his father’s estate was attacked by Fulani herdsmen .
His reaction was to douse the tension in the town that the Otogenarian had been attacked by Fulani herdsmen .
The statement read “I have confirmed that while cows did stray onto his land yesterday, there has been no attack, no violence and no attempt to enter the house.”
Accoroding to the source , the Nobel Laurel was around and was about going out when the incident happened .
Prof. Soyinka was reported to have invited the police to arrest the herdsman who allowed his herds to stray into his Estate.
He said Soyinka led the policemen to search for the herdman who had fled shortly after his herds strayed into the compound .
He said the incident happened on Tuesday around 2pm.
He said I was around Baba’s (Professor Soyinka’s) house, I saw 20 cows inside the premises of Baba (Professor Wole Soyinka) they were drinking from the stream inside his compound.
” I used stones to disperse them, i didn’t know baba was already coming in his car, baba met us there, his driver stopped the car and used the car to block them.”
Speaking with newsmen , the owner of the herds ,Kazeem Sorinola said he hired the herdsman to help him rear the herds within the area where Soyinka estate was located .
He said “I am Kazzim Sorinola , hired Awwal to help me rear my herds .
“What happened was that ,yesterday , suddenly, he called me that a cow was missing. Because of the situation ,he abandoned the rest and they strayed. As he was redirecting them, they strayed into Baba Soyinka’s house .
I later saw Baba Soyinka with Policemen searching for the herder . i took the herder to the police station and we have found the missing cow.The herder was not armed. I have 23 cows only one missed and we have found it.”
Speaking at the scene of the incident , the Commissioner of Police ,Edward Ajogun also confirmed the incident .
Ajogun who visited the estate for an on-the-spot assessment said the command could confirmed the presence of the herds in the premises of the Nobel laurel .
The Commissioner said contrary to the claims that the Fulani herdsmen invaded Soyinka’s house, the herds were owned a Yoruba man .
He said “we have evidence of cow dung but, we did not see the cows.
“What we heard was that three of the cows strayed into the compound of the Nobel Laurel not more more than 20 meters away from the entrance and they were immediately chased out .
“I even heard that the Nobel Laurel saw the cows heading towards his compound and of course he directed that they shouod be chased away.
“The cows were owned by a gentleman by the name Kazeem Sorinola who is a Yoruba man .
” He placed the cows under the charge of a Fulani man and the cows were not owned by Fulanimen, so, only three of the cows strayed into the compound ,no destruction was carried out on the compound and the act was not a willful one .
“Three out of 23 cows he was grazing around were the ones that strayed into the premises . we thank God that nothing was destroyed. and the cows were owned by a yoruba man and there was no way a Yoruba man will willfully invade the premises of nobel laurel, it is not true .
The point the cows were , before the Nobel Laurel stopped them was 500 meters away from his compound, that did not stop three of the cows from straying into the compound of the nobel laurel .”
