There were incidents of gas explosion in two different places in Abeokuta last week Wednesday and Thursday.
The first gas explosion killed an infant and two others who got burnt while a technician was topping up the gas of faulty refrigerator at Oke-Egunyan, along NTA Road in Abeokuta.
After 24 hours, another gas explosion occured on Mercy Road, Panseke , Abeokuta where a technician,Sanya Shonde was injured which later led to the amputation of his leg.
The injured technician who was topping up a faulty refrigerator when the gas exploded later gave up on Saturday and was buried same day due to the 80 per cent degree of his burnt body .
After the two sad occurrences of gas explosion ,the family of one of the deceased has called out to the government to investigate the causes of recurrence explosion.
The family ( Shonde), has implored the state government to investigate the recurrence of gas explosion ,describing it as more than coincidence.
Preliminary investigation by PLATFORM TIMES revealed that the gas explosion incidents might have been caused as a result of adulterated gas.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Olalekan Junaid narrated that the gas explosion which claimed the life of his uncle(Sanya Shonde) was not due to an unprofessional incapability, saying, the deceased had been in the business for over 35 years.
He also said the deceased was popularly known for his expertise as he worked with big hostels both within and outside Ogun State.
He, however urged the government to investigate so as to prevent future recurrence.
He said adulterated gas might have entered the town ,the matter he said must be quickly investigated to avert likely more casualties .
He said “We want to call the attention of the government to the incident because we don’t know where it can happen in another house.
“Sanya Shonde has been in the business for over 35 years. His business name is Hope. His office is located at Onikolobo,Abeokuta.
“He is my uncle. I grew up to know him doing the job. He consult for different big hotels in Abeokuta, refilling and maintaining their ACs and others. He’s actually not a small person. He’s a professional in the job of over 35 years of practising.
When asked how he got the news about the death of his uncle , Junaid said “I got the news via my uncle, a younger brother to the deceased. He called me to inform me that he(the deceased) has been rushed to the hospital due to gas explosion while he was working. Of course, our initial reaction was to save his life by taking to medical order.
“Then we started doing all the things the doctor asked us to do. He did tried to recover after 24 hours, but he relapsed again before he passed on. So, it was shocking.
“If proper investigation can be done, because he was not the only one that I lost last week. I heard that there was another one incident somewhere else in Abeokuta. A close friend of mine who was also in the same business lost his life. His name Sola He died in an explosion too. And two of them are not related. Meaning that they are not working together. He was also refilling when the explosion happened. My uncle was also refilling when it happened.
“So, if proper investigation can be done because it is dangerous. Because, If someone refills his car gas, and there is an explosion inside the car in an hold up, that will be a big disaster.
“If there is something government can do, and probably investigate, and know where this gas is coming from. We have nothing to hide. If they can do an investigation so that somebody else will not become a victim again”, he implored.
