No fewer than 75 councillors who dumped the former Governor of Ogun state , Senator Ibikunle Amosun for the state governor, Dapo Abiodun in 2018 have accused Abiodun of betraying their trust .
The councilors who were drawn from Wards spread across 236 political wards and 20 local government areas of the State lamented that despite that they supported 2019 Governorship ambition of Dapo Abiodun while eyeing the ticket of the All Progressives Congress , yet , he betrayed and dumped them .
The 75 councilors said part of their switched loyalty to Abiodun was that they were called Dapo Abiodun councilors ,describing themselves as the first set of political office holders that supported his 2019 Governorship ambition.
Explaining why they dumped Amosun for Abiodun, the aggrieved former councilors said the political situation where Amosun was believed to making attempt to float new political party – Allied People’s Movement (APM) contrary to the party decision made them go for Abiodun at the expense of the then incumbent governor .
They claimed that they suffered for the action , but, they felt relieved when they got series of promises from Abiodun which includes payment of N25,000 monthly having been sacked by Amosun’s government .
Part of their Lamentations was that the governor promised them that once he emerged as the governor he would return them as councilors ,but, they calimed that reverse has been the case .
The statement read ” We are 75 Councillors that are renamed by His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun MFR, as DAPO ABIODUN COUNCILLORS (DA COUNCILORS) in 2018, having been the First Set of Political Office Holders that supported 2019 Governorship Ambition of Prince Dapo Abiodun while proposing to contest on the platform of our Great Party – All Progressives Congress (APC).
“We were all democratically-elected in our various Political Wards spread across 236 Political Wards and 20 Local Government Areas of Ogun State and all serving under the outgone Government of His Excellency Ibikunle Amosun CON, FCA.
“But, the political circumstances that surrounded 2019 Governorship Poll in the State by which the incumbent Governor Amosun proposed to float new Political Party – Allied People’s Movement (APM) to foist a particular Governorship Candidate on all of us in All Progressives Congress (APC) as against the Candidacy of Prince Dapo Abiodun which the Hierarchy of APC in Ogun State and at the National Level supported.
“This prompted us to make U-turn from the political camp of then incumbent Governor Amosun in the APC family, and supported, as first set of Political Office Holders and against all odds, then popular candidate of our Party – APC, Prince Dapo Abiodun MFR and we all moved and threw our Political Weight behind Prince Abiodun in APC and he won, becoming the Executive Governor of Ogun State.
“It’s therefore on record that Prince Dapo Abiodun did promise us – all the 75 DA COUNCILORS, beforehand, that we shall be given automatic tickets to come back as COUNCILORS being the compensation for our political sacrifice and withholding of our emoluments and political benefits as Councillors under Governor Amosun.
“Prince Dapo Abiodun, promised us, among other things that – We shall come back as COUNCILORS in new dispensation and be given N25,000 monthly stipend each, until we, the 75 DA COUNCILORS, were given automatic tickets to re-contest in all our Political Wards spread across 236 Political Wards and 20 Local Government Areas of Ogun State.
“Alas, since more than 2 Years of Governor Dapo Abiodun on the Governorship Seat in Ogun State, we – 75 DA COUNCILORS – are still floating, suffering and nowhere to be found in the All Progressives Congress (APC) political calculations; in Governor Dapo Abiodun-led Government of Ogun State and even at our Local Government Areas!
“This goes against the grain as the sayings go – “Words Mean Nothing When Your Actions Contradict” and of course, “The Saddest Thing About Betrayal Is That It Never Comes From Your Enemies, but your Friends and in our own case – It’s actually coming from Governor Dapo Abiodun; our friend, the man who earned our loyalty and political support but threw us in the dustbins!
“For the record, we wouldn’t have come to the media, we should have settled all this, using internal political mechanism, but it seemed all the internal arrangements failed: Our Correspondence to Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Vice-President; Governor Dapo Abiodun MFR and his wife, Bamidele; Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele; Secretary to State Government, Mr Tokunbo Talabi; APC State Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, among others, but no tangible response nor any action.
“We had political dialogue with Rt. Hon Tunji Egbetokun, Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters; Hon Afolabi Afuape, Ogun State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs; Adebiyi Adeleye, Special Adviser, Political Affairs; Comrade Tunde Oladunjoye, Ogun State Publicity Secretary, All Progressives Congress (APC), among others, who met all of us at different times to mediate on behalf of Mr Governor, but to no avail.
“Although, some APC leaders and elders in the State came to us to play a spoiler role in the forthcoming Local Government Elections in the State since we were not given automatic tickets to come back as Councillors in our various political wards, anymore as promised by Governor Dapo Abiodun, we however considered that to be anti-party activities.
“We believe that our respected Excos, leaders, elders and members have elected Councillors in either direct or indirect party primaries to fly APC party tickets in the Local Government Election slated for 24th July, 2021 across the 20 Local Government Areas of the State. We understand what it takes to arrive at their political decisions, we can’t ask Mr Governor to upturn that in an undemocratic manner, that will be bad.”
The councilors however made some demands which include appointment as either Secretary to the local Government’s ,Special Advisers or Supervisory councilors .
The statement further read “consequently, we have resolved to lessen Mr Governor of political burden of giving us automatic tickets for Councillorship as promised, but we want to demand that Mr Governor prevail on the APC Hierarchy in the State to consider our indispensable sacrifice at that time and sufferings thereafter.
” Secretary to the Local Government – We believe that members of 75 DA Councillors are more experienced administratively and politically to be considered for the Position of Secretary to the Local Government in any of the 20 Local Government Councils. Since our members are spread across the 20 Local Government Councils, we have people that are qualified among us to be considered.
“Supervisory Councillors – Just like the Governor of the State need Commissioners as members of State Executive Council, elected Chairmen in all 20 Local Councils require certain number of Supervisory Councillors and our members are already available for such positions, being already officials of Local Government Councils, they are well positioned for the positions.
“Consultants and Special Advisers – Our members can also be found suitable for these positions, either at the Sttate or Local Government Levels. We believe that our members, as experienced party men and former officials of Local Councils, we are fit for any political office deemed as necessary by Mr Governor or Chairmen of Local Government.
“We demand that Governor Dapo Abiodun MFR, the Executive Governor of Ogun State should hold a meeting with us personally and without any proxy as he did when he promised us in 2018 while proposing to contest for Governorship as we believe that meeting with us – 75 DA Councillors – will douse our tension and portray him as promise-keeping Governor.
“We believe strongly that our Gentleman Governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) will listen to all our prayers and act as fast as possible to pacify seemingly aggrieved 75 DA COUNCILORS.”
