As part of effort to immortalise a former national commissioner of Independent Electoral Commission, late Prince Deji Soyebi, the Abeokuta sports club has named its Scrabble and Chess building after him.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that Soyebi who reportedly died on the 15th of July, 2021 after a brief illness at the age of 66 years single handedly looked for donors to construct the building which was completed within six months.
Speaking at the event marked to immortalised late Soyebi, the Captain and chairman of the Scrabble and Chess section of the club, Alhaji Kayode Taiwo said the numerous contribution of the deceased in the development of the club made them take the decision to name the building after him.
Taiwo disclosed that eighty percent of the money used to construct the building being named after Soyebi was donated by him.
Taiwo described the late Deji Soyebi as a quiet philanthropist, cheerful giver, a noble Omoluabi and humble and humane personality.
He added that the building being named after him won’t exist without the contribution of the late INEC Commissioner.
Similarly, the Immediate past Captain of the Scrabble and Chess section of the club, Dr Tunde Olowoyo also said the deceased single handedly looked for donors to construct the building being named after him, which was completed within six months.
He also described the deceased as a man who like to do things without being noticed, adding that he was also an humble man that people should learn from.
The President of the club, Olusola Egbesola in his address also described the late INEC Commissioner has a man that loves to be around people, no matter their background and also a good philanthropist.
He said the deceased was generous and caring person.
In his tribute, a former president of the club, Chief Akin Majekodunmi asked people to emulate the generosity and humility of the deceased.
He charged everyone present to do things that would make people remember them for good.
The brother to the deceased, Pastor Adewunmi Soyebi who spoke on behalf of the family appreciated the club and the scrabble section of the club for honouring the late Soyebi.
He also thanked them for appreciating his effort in the club by naming the building after him, he prayed for everyone that God will honour them all as they had honour his brother.
