But, for providence ,the Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu would have been consumed by the Hawks and sharks that were lurking round the exalted seat of the CMD in the 28-year old Federal Medical Centre ,Abeokuta
In the annal of the 250-bedded specialist hospital , no Muslim was ever appointed as the CMD let alone being returned for a second term .
PLATFORM TIMES’s search revealed that Professor E. O. Otolorin was the pioneer Medical Director and ran the institution from 1993 He was succeeded by Dr. T. O. Motayo who administered the hospital between 2000 and 2008. He was succeeded by Dr. O. S. Sotiloye who steered the affairs of hospital till 2017 and was later succeeded by Dr. Hunyibo for one year before Prof Adewale Musa-Olomu took over the mantle .
Like Sotiloye , Prof. Musa-Olomu was baptised seriously for attempting for second term in office .
But, the unions that protested against Sotiloye while in office rallied round Musa-Olomu for his second term ambition .
The programme was delayed due to the enjoyment of the music . It later commenced and there were speeches from all the parties .
THE INTRIGUES, POWER PLAY AND BLACK MAIL
The game that started like a child’s play metamorphosed into a full blown crisis that delayed the confirmation of Musa-Olomu’s second term as CMD .
What many people thought could be resolved within a short period got escalated into legal issues , blackmail, media war and power play .
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that , for providence , Musa-Olomu would have been consumed in the crisis . Just like he had serious oppositions from some powerful people in the state and country, he also got the backing of some powerful people both in the state and beyond .
PLATFORM TIMES also gathered that the CMD had stepped on many toes and those affected seemed to have vowed to hit back at him with ‘No mercy”.
The opportunity however presented itself when Musa-Olomu showed interest for a second term .
The crisis which started like an intra-wrangling later escalated to an inter-crisis and later took a national dimension
It was reliably gathered that the crisis between the state governor ,Prince Dapo Abiodun and his predecessor ,Senator Ibikunle Amosun reportedly crept into it .
Obviously , Musa-Olomu got tremendous supports from the administration of Amosun which facilitated the first ever University of Medicine in the state among others .
It was believed that Musa-Olomu ,due to the closeness with Amosun is believed to be a sympathiser to the Amosun’s cause ,therefore , ‘my enemy’s friend is my enemy’.
It was also gathered that Musa-Olomu reportedly incurred the wrath of the current administration during the first and second waves of COVID-19 .
Musa-Olomu’s sins according to a source were too big for the government to overlook, hence, decided to take a pound of flesh over his past action .
Investigation however showed that the internal opposition erupted following the backlash of employment saga.
PLATFORM TIMES reliably gathered that some workers including management staff were caught in the employment racketeering running into thousands of money .
It was further gathered that the panel of investigation was set up to unveil the perpetrators . The panel however indicted some workers including those who worked directly with the CMD and some management staff .
The culprits were said to have been recommended for sanction which include demotion and redeployment among others .
In the cause of the implementation , the crisis reared its ugly head . Some confidential documents got leaked and media were reached .
The can of worms was opened and the whole premises became messed up with odour .
The fight went personal which led to the query on the certificates of the CMD.
It also led to the suspicion over the age of the CMD . It was believe that the CMD falsified his age which the opposition described as a criminal offence.
The CMD was forced to make public what ought to be confidential in the cause of defending his certificate .
He responded to the query and was given a clean bill of health . But, it was not yet Uhuru for the CMD as the opposition launched more missiles which forced Abuja authorities to withhold the reappointment letter .
THE UNIONS SOLIDARITY
Some unions at the FMC Abeokuta during the crisis threw their weights behind the second term ambition of Musa-Olomu and having succeeded , they celebrated it in a big way .
They went as far as writing the Ministry of Health on their support for Musa-Olomu’s second term .
And after he was announced as the CMD for the second term , days after ,the unions threw a party for him .
Chairman ,JOHESU ,Sunday Olatokun in his remarks said “I was one of the people that resisted your entrance into the FMC four years ago .
“But you told us that after six months if you did not turn around FMC we should send you away .
“Has he not turned around FMC?” The statement sparked up a thunderous affirmative response from the surging enthusiastic crowd .
He added “your God has fought for you, continue with the way you are doing.
The 20220/2021 NYSC members serving in the hospital staged a guard of honour for the CMD .
PARTY TIME, GRAND RECEPTION FOR THE CMD
Six days after he was appointed and sworn in as CMD second time , some union workers wore their dancing shoes with a uniformed Ankara and trooped to the Tekobo road for a grand reception for Prof. Musa-Olomu.
A band was hired with sonorous trumpet throwing assorted music to the waist of the elated unions who abandoned their duties for the party time .
Fortunately , the hospital was almost empty following the strike action embarked upon by the National Association of Resident Doctors . So, no life in danger .
The workers assembled at the telemedicine and danced round the premises . They later took the joy out with all sorts of proverbial songs ,sending signal to the opposition of the CMD.
The assembly could have been mistaken for a political rally due to all sorts of politically-loades songs with proverbial messages supported with beautiful dancing steps by the unions .
It was a day of joy for them that their man has come back to the seat after a long battle and war .
HOW I TURNED AROUND FMC ABEOKUTA
The CMD disclosed that he met the hospital in comatose, saying, everything was not working but within his first term he has been able to turn around the place
While highlighting what he has done to transform the 28-year-old tertiary hospital , Musa-Olomu said ” when I assumed office five years ago , this place was like an empty hospital .There was no single ICU machine ,no ultra Sign Machine, these are the least equipment, ordinary equipment that you can even get in a quack centre. If this is a tertiary health institution, we didn’t meet any.
“Virtually, the theatre was not working, out of eight theatres, only one was partially working, there was nothing in the lab. Male and female surgical as well as medical wards were marged together, a lot of abandoned projects. But, you all witnessed it.”
While making reference to the telemedicine International Centre where the programme took place , the CMD said further “this very hall was not existence and this is the first that we have in the 28th years history of this hospital when it transformed into a medical centre.”
He continued “You see the relatives patients inn. The relatives of our patients were sleeping beside gutters, they were sleeping in the rain, in the sun. But we have established the relatives patients inn for these people.
“Our pharmacy department was nothing, there was non on ground, we established it.
“We establish four wing building that houses Ophthalmology BAT, and physiotherapy .
“For Ophthalmology, we will ensure that we keep it to the latest, the samething with radiology and I’m happy that at the last accreditation, we have a full accreditation. The accreditation of surgery came yesterday (Wednesday, September 8,2021) and the news was also extremely good, all these happened during my tenure. I promised that I will deliver and I thank God that I have delivered.
“To the extent that when the servicom presidency was conducting, was trying to evaluate all the Federal Medicals in the country, FMC Abeokuta came first.”
MULTI-MILLION NAIRA PROJECTS FACILITATED
Musa-Olomu did not mince words when he rolled out some new capital intensive projects he has facilitated for the hospital .
He said those proposed projects would commence as he began his second term in office and expectedly will be completed before his tenure ends.
He disclosed that the likes of former governor of Ogun state ,Ibikunle Amosun , the current speaker of House of Representatives ,Femi Gbajabiamila and minority whip ,Abdul Majeed Adekoya among others have shown their readiness to construct multi-million naira projects for the hospital .
He said “Beside us( the Telemedicine hall) on the right, Senator Ibikunle Amosu is bringing up 180 beds Wards and on the left side here, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila trying to construct our Radiotherapy centre.”
“The rate at which Cancer is killing in the world today, it is that every district, there must be a Radiotherapy centre. I thank God that we have Radiotherapy centre coming up.
“We thank God that Honourable Mojeed Adekoya, a minority whip at the House of Representatives is giving us a befitting world class cardiotheraphy
centre that is worth N500 million . Half of the money has been released and the construction will start any moment from now by the special Grace of God.
MY NEW PLEDGE
The highly excited CMD said “the thing has happened. So, let me tell you that this I am saying it again, the pressmen you can note it. If at the end of four years you come here and say let us hear if you have fulfilled your mission.
” Today, I can assure you that may be in the next six months, you have a befitting Medical Directors Office Complex in this Centre, we fashioned this after UCH London. So, it’s there and we will complete it within the next six months.
” We have a new Accident and Emergency ward for our children. You know a lot of people that are dropping dead everyday and is the cause of inadequate cardial services.
We have the new occupational centre as well as palliative centre and by the special Grace of God, we have been able to get enough funds to turn around our Accident and Emergency.
We have a molecular Lab under that will soon finish. By the special Grace of God, we will have a new pathology centre that will have a modern mortuary.
“And may Almighty god be with us, a burn unit for the plastic surgery and all our programmes, I can assure you by the end of 2022, will be fully accredited to meet international world standard. This is what I’m promising you again.
“Your accounts department , will have their complex, nurses, will have their complex. More, I’m assuring you more houses for our corps members as well as our house officers and with this I’m happy that have been coming for accreditation.
“I was told that the nurses just held a conference here about two weeks ago and the CMD of LUTH was in this hall and he was shocked that this type of FMC will have this type of screen. There’s non in the country among all the tertiary institutions.
” So, based on where we have travelled to, our experience across the globe, I can tell you that this one will be rated as one in the country. And by Almighty God, it has been rated already. When we now compile the establishment of our University, I’m happy that it has been approved at the Senate, the house of Reps will soon approve it and it will soon be sent to the Federal Executive for final say. I can assure you that we are looking at a university that will be among the first rated universities.
“We are already collaborating with University of London, they communicated with me yesterday(Wednesday ,September 8,2021) that about this University, what are you doing and I told them that it will soon be established. So, we will see how we can build a good legacy for our children that will be going for higher education in this country.
“So, dont let me waste much of your time. This is not the time to make speech but, to let you know that whatever we are doing is not for us. It’s for our unborn generation, I’m already a Professor, so, the legacy I want to leave behind and apart from that, with what you have done today, you have shown the outside world that I cater for you. As far as your welfare is concerned, I promise you and I promise you more, is going to increase if I’m still here as a Medical Director.”
THE PLEAS FOR CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM AND NOT BOOBY TRAPS
He reminded the gathering that in as much as he is not Angel and infallible, he needs constructive criticism from the people .
According to him, “Only God is the entity that is infallible . All we need to do, all we are pleading with everybody is that whatever error we commit, please come to us, direct our attention to it, we will rectify.
He however warned against any move or plot by the management team or worker to set a booby trap for him .
He said “It’s not by trying to setting traps to imprison ourselves, to cause trouble as if we cannot solve these problems. Even the God that created us, in the holy Bible, he says forgive us our sins as we forgive those who trespass against us.
” God does not say that go to heaven and do not commit sin. But, He said there will be measure of everything in heaven. We will weigh your good against your bad . If your good outweighs your bad, you will enter into heaven and the other way round. So, try to access us in the last four years that we have come on board. Try to weigh all the goods that we have done and all these things that you are flying about, which one out weigh each other?
“That is the way you should have judged us, we did not clam to be perfect but, we never have any intension.
I HAVE NOT STOLEN FMC MONEY AND I WILL NOT STEAL
Musa-Olomu however, said he had never stolen a Kobo from the covers of the hospital throughout his four years tenure .
He also pledged that he will not deep his hand and steal the hospital money during his second term .
He said ” I told you a Kobo of government money will never enter into my pocket and I’m saying it openly now.
“So, nobody should be carrying about that we are thinking about how to make ourselves rich unnecessarily.
“So, we will try as much as possible when we meet at the MD’s forum to iron out how we are going to Kick-start our second term. But I can assure you as you are here, even after your retirement, whichever way the hospital can help anyone of you, we are ready to help you.”
A MILD DRAMA ENSUED
It was like a mild drama when Musa-Olomu publicly called out two management staff who were perceived to be involved in the crisis engulfed the FMC for more than three months .
Apart from the obvious not too friendly banters from the crowd to the duo who were sitting with the CMD on the podium facing the audience , the mentioning of their name amplified the already charged hall .
PLATFORM TIMES observed the body language of the unions leaders and members who were mostly clad in Ankara to be not friendly to the duo .
Apparently pitching tent with the CMD on the matter which did not consume him eventually , while they showed their friendship to the CMD ,they engaged in veiled attacks through songs on the duo.
The crowd if allowed might have devoured the duo for their perceived roles in the imbroglio that put the hospital in the eyes of storm .
The CMD in his concluding speech , asked the duo of Director of Administration and Head of Clinical Services, Adeyemi Vaughan and Fidelis Ojeblenu to rise up which they did .
After raising isuses with veiled references which were not ambiguous to the gathering , he however, told them to pledge their support and stop playing opposition to his adminaitration .
He had publicly promised that he will not relate with them as enemies and that he has forgiven them . But, he insisted that they must reciprocate the gesture .
PLATFORM TIMES had gathered that the CMD had some evidence against some people that worked against his second term but , decided to shealth the sword .
He said “But, before I sit down ladies and gentlemen, I’m just seeking the indulgence of my HCS now, Dr Fidelis Ojeblenu, as well as the DA to please stand up and I want the two of them. As far as I’m concern, nobody has offended me.
“We are all partners in progress and I want you to listen carefully. I want you to listen very carefully, God has established an encyclying inside us. Look at our structures, what goes into our mouth,
something that is good right?, Food drinks, water and it makes us grow.
“But, what comes out from the anus?.
Something that is bad, nobody will want to eat whatever that comes out from the anus. But which means what God is telling us, even in this hall, you see this place we sit down at the back we have the toilet, nobody will want to stay in the toilet.
“We will need the opposition , but we should not take it to the bad level. Because, anyone who is digging a pit should not dig it much, if he thinks that it is his enemy that will fall inside and he ends up being the one that falls in it .
That’s the thing.
“Listen ladies and gentlemen, please whatever anybody is doing, it shouldn’t be on excess , excess of everything is bad. So, when you eat with your mouth, something must come out as a waste product. But, you can’t say you hate your anus to go and sew it and say stop functioning. So, we want them to bring constructive citizens. If I want to extrapolate it medically, let’s imagine that normal defecation and this anus wants to misbehave and you are having diarrhea, you take tablet, you take capsule, it didn’t stop, you will feel bad. That’s what I want to tell our opposition.”
“So, before the world now, I want you to say it with your mouth. I have said my own, nobody is my enemy, you are all my friends. Those that are not here, those who caused whatever they caused, and I will never for a second victimise anybody because of this thing.
“They are all my friends, they are all partners in progress, we are one, let’s start doing good. Say it now and wherever the thing is coming from, it has come, it has stopped there. Any other thing that is remaining, go and stop it. Say it with your mouth now.”
HOW THE CRISIS POSED THREAT TO NEW UNIVERSITY, DENIED FG’s OPPORTUNITIES
The CMD while lamenting what the impact of the crisis on the hospital , he said history was about repeating itself .
Accoroding to him , Ogun state lost hosting the University College which was taken to Ibadan die to a crisis .
He said “Please, stop all these things, you have missed a lot of things. I was informed that there is a committee that FMC Abeokuta was to be put inside, that committee is for the Federal Government.
“But, what they said was that there’s trouble there, dont put it. This is one of the effects of this thing. It’s not to Musa but, generations unborn.
“You know that, that’s how you missed University of Ibadan in 1948 and that’s why I’m saying it. Let’s solve all these grudges so that they will not say that dont give them any university, the place is not settle, there’s no peace there. Anywhere there’s no peace, government is not ready to put whatever will cause trouble.”
The hall had almost a pin-drop silence as Dr. Vaughan took the microphone and made his statement .
From the observation , Dr. Vaughan did not meet the expectation of the people with the method he adopted .
PLATFORM TIMES observed that the people in the hall had expected him to apologise for the perceived tile he played that almost consumed the CMD .
He however, promised to be a team player and ensure the progress of the hospital .
But, when the Ojeblenu collected the microphone , many people told PLATFORM TIMES that they could read a.lot of sincerity on him .
Ojeblenu who was acting CMD for three.months after Musa-Olomu handed over was also perceived to bale part of the plot to bust the second term ambition of Musa-Olomu .
He was however clear in his statement on where he belonged during the crisis.
He pledged more support and cooperation while he went spiritual that the emergence of the Musa-Olomu as the CMD and his second term appointment were God’s doing .
Ojeblenu said “We have come a long way. whatever you have passed through it is to prepare you for the future.”
