The Ogun State government has advised residents to avoid dumping refuse at the roadside, urging them to always call the agency in charge.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the government noted that it is the residents’ rights to call for the picking up of their refuse dump.
The government said this at a press briefing jointly organised by the ministries of Physical planning and Urban development and Environment in commemoration of 2021 World Habitat Day .
Speaking at the press conference, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development ,Olatunji Odunlami and the Special Adviser to the governor on Environment , Ola Oresanya also warned the people against engaging in dangerous acts that could lead to the generation of carbon dioxide.
The government also stressed that it has become a crime to dump refuse on the road in the state .
Giving the warning against burning and dumping of refuse on the roads in the state, Oresanya described the acts as wicked and illegal .
He said “burning of refuse is an act of wickedness, is illegal, your next neighbour may be asthmatic you are killing him.
“We don’t tolerate it in Ogun state.On no account must anybody burn refuse in Ogun state under no condition . You cannot burn your refuse ,if your refuse is not collected there are number to call .
“Call us to pick your refuse ,is your right ,don’t take it to the road side . we have big bins on the roads, they are mainly for markets, it is not for household use ,it is for markets.”
Olatunji however advised on the need to reduce carbon footprints through use of energy efficient, use of alternative means of transport to work and embrace the three RS (Reduce ,Reuse Recycle ) and change of dietary habits .
