The National Association of Nigerian Students has demanded the immediate redeployment of the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole over alleged bribery and abuse of power.
The students’ body accused the newly deployed CP of unlawfully arresting Olawale Balogun, a former NANS chairman in the state as a political thug without any proof.
The Deputy Coordinator of NANS in Southwest, Comrade Oladimeji Uthman in a press briefing held at NUJ Secretariat, Abeokuta alleged that the CP and his men detained and paraded
Balogun without having a concrete evidence against him.
PLATFORM TIMES recalled that the Police on Monday claimed to have arrested six suspects with guns and ammunitions in relation to the attack that happened at Ake Palace during a factional congress of All Progressives Congress last week Saturday.
The Police boss while parading the suspects claimed Balogun and five others were arrested with an Hilux van found with guns and ammunitions.
But, the students’ body described the claim by the Ogun CP as ‘lie from hell’ which he could not substantiate.
The Deputy Southwest coordinator explained that Balogun was arrested while crossing the road at Ake and not in an Hilux van as claimed by the CP.
Uthman described the action of the police as ‘heinous’ against comradeship and the people of the state.
He noted, “in contravention to the Human right charter and section 41(1) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) which guarantees free movement of Nigerians within Nigeria without hindrance, the police arrested Comrade Olawale Balogun against this background even when nothing incriminating was found on him and the Nigeria police under CP Lanre Bankole immediately spinned the narration to accommodate the evil plots orchetrated by his men and levied charges against the innocent Comrade Balogun while the real culprits who perpetrated the evil continues to move freely around the state even when their pictures as been captured in actions are all over on the internet for more than 48hours now.
“No single arrest by CP Lanre Bankole has been made and we as a student of history are really waiting to see how life and properties under his watch will be protected in ogun state.
“While acting unprofessionally and to remain a ‘good-boy’ before his pay masters, CP Lanre Sikiru Bankole has remained incommunicado to the student constituency in the state and beyond inorder to flesh and finish the deadly job he has taken instead of protecting lives and properties of Nigerians in Ogun state.
“He has assigned to himself the awful task of being used by politicians of no substance to cause havoc with the aim of settling political scores in the state. Wale Balogun is neither a politician nor thug and as such, must be freed.”
He further said, “CP Lanre Bankole has also proven to be inexperienced, compromised, corrupt, lack basic intelligence and cannot handle the job assigned to him by the Nigeria Police Force and the Police Service Commission as a police commissioner in the Gateway State.
“Also, we have it on good record that; CP Lanre Bankole was paid the sum of #50 Million by the powers that be from Ogun
to prosecute Comrade Olawale Balogun for crime he knows nothing about in their bid of settling political scores with former Ogun governor and senator representing Ogun Central, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.
“CP Bankole has allowed himself to be used and therefore has incurred the wrath of the entire Nigerian Students in the six states of Southwest, Nigeria and even beyond.”
The student’s body however demanded for the immediate and unconditional release of Balogun from the Police custody in the State.
Uthman during the briefing also demanded open letter and public apology from the police for subjecting Balogun to unlawful arrest and media trial.
He also called for the immediate suspension and investigation of CP Bankole by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).
He said, “furthermore, we call for the immediate suspension and investigation of CP Lanre Sikiru Bankole by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) for accepting bribe to undermine his oath of office in fragrant abuse of power and privileges by taking sides with politicians in a matter he was supposed to be just and fair as a public servant living on the taxes of Nigerians whom he sworn to protect. ”
NANS also gave 12 hours deadline to the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba and Police Service Commission to yield to the demands of the student’s body.
He noted,”finally, we hereby give CP Lanre Sikiru Bankole, IGP Usman Alkali Baba and the Police Service Commission only 12 hours to accede to our demands stated above, otherwise, we shall be forced to involve and move the National Secretariat of NANS to Ogun State and exercise the full extant of Aluta Laws as we refuse to be intimidated and can not allow our comrade be sacrificed as political bait by the politicians and police in Ogun State.
“CP Lanre Bankole has murdered sleep in his first six days as Police Commissioner in Ogun State and therefore, should be redeployed out of the state for peace and security of residents of the state.”
