Gov. Bala Mohammed has spent about N150 million on the construction of additional waste collection sites in Bauchi State.
Alhaji Hamisu Shira, Commissioner for Housing and Environment, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday.
Shira said that the amount also covered expenditure on the procurement of additional payloaders, repairs of six trucks, and a water tanker.
“The payloaders and trucks are to be used for waste clearance exercise at the collection sites,” he said.
The commissioner said that the ministry had conducted a stakeholders’ meeting designed to map out strategies towards enhancing environmental protection in the state.
He reiterated the commitment of the state government to ensure compliance with the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, protect the environment, and safeguard public health.
He said: “We will not relent in ensuring effective enforcement of the existing environmental laws in the state.”
He added that most of the environmental problems were man-made.
