Eyewitnesses have narrated to PLATFORM TIMES how a trader popularly called Iya Arike and her grandchild reportedly met with death during the fire outbreak that happened in Lafenwa market on Sunday.
The eyewitnesses claimed Iya Arike was caught in the fire disaster while trying to save her grandchild who fell inside gutter.
Iya Arike was reportedly in her late fifties and a trader who sells seasonings.
One of the eyewitnesses, Shalewa Ogunsola said everybody was running for his life when her grandchild fell inside a gutter close to the petrol tanker.
Ogunsola explained that Iya Arike however could not save herself and grandchild because of how heavy the fire was.
She narrated, “we were together when we got to know that some shops in Lafenwa have gutted by fire. Immediately, we all ran for our dear lives, but Iya Arike while trying to save her grandchild who fell inside gutter met with this unfortunate incident.”
Another eyewitness simply identified as Iya Gbenga said she advised the deceased to take another route, but she declined.
She said,” immediately we saw that some parts of Lafenwa have gutted by fire, I told Iya Arike to let us pass inside the market, but she insisted she wanted to pass the main road.
“While I passed through the market to run for my dear life, I later discovered that Iya Arike and her grandchild was burnt to death. It was really unfortunate.”
When this reporter got to her shop on Monday morning, one of her children could be sighted weeping at the shops.
Many traders however described the victim as an easy going person who was unfortunate to have met with the accident.
