Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Mohammed Mahmood Abubakar has told Nigerians to stop using Sniper Insecticide chemical and other lethal chemicals to store food stuffs .
Abubakar warned that the Incorrect, inappropriate and abusive application of pesticides and herbicides to store food can impair the health of human, animals and the environment.
Abubakar revealed this at the media briefing to mark the International Day of Plant Health in Abuja.
According to him uncontrolled use of plant protection products like pesticides are one of the challenges in plant health
He also disclosed thst to mainstream safe and responsible pesticide use in the country, NAQS has produced the National Pesticide Policy, a requirement of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), which will soon be gazette by the Honourable Minister of Agriculture.”
Addressing newsmen, an expert Dr Vincent Isegbe, said plant health is everybody’s business, adding that all Nigerians should join hands to promote plant health.
Isegbe, who spoke extensively on the rejection of Nigeria’s farm produce in foreign countries, blamed exporters for engaging in prohibitive items.
He advised exporters of agricultural produce to follow the right procedures by coming to the Agency for necessary certifications before embarking on export.
