The National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS), has begged the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo Olu for the increment of bursary of indigent students in the State.
Busary is money given by the State governments of different States to indigent students of that State to help them subsidize tertiary education.
The students body implored the governor to increase the amount for the bursary, judging that the economic situation in the condition is unbearable for most students.
In a press statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Hassan Abdulsalam, the president of the Union, Shasanya Akinola commended the effort of the Lagos state government to uphold its better welfarism agenda.
Shasanya noted that he deemed it fit to ask for the increment from N25,000 to N50,000 for bursary and N200,000 to N500,000 for scholarship because of the economic situation of the country.
He maintained that the current bursary can no longer sustain students for a year.
The statement reads in part: “This is coming after the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, approved N290million for 2021 Bursary and Local Scholarships for indigenes in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
It would be recalled that Students that are studying Non science related courses are receiving N25,000 while Science and Engineering are receiving N30,000 and N50,000 respectively for bursary while those on Scholarship are receiving N200,000.
“We are appealing to the Governor as part of his agenda better welfarism of Lagosian to help increase the Bursary to N50,000 flat rate to students while Scholarship should be increased to N250,000.
“This is due to the current economy hardship of the country and N25,000 can’t be enough to sustain students on campus yearly.
“Its saddened that some students are in a state where they don’t have family to cater, defend them, rescue and ascertain their wellbeing.
“We believed in the blueprint of Babajide Sanwo Olu to give Quality and free education to the good people of Lagos and this will help in achieving the template.”
Meanwhile, the president enjoined the students to remain calm as he assured them that the need would be done by the state government.
