The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC says the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, will be deployed for the conduct of the Area Council Election in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu stated this on Tuesday, during the first quarterly consultative meeting between INEC and leaders of Political Parties.

He said that the commission would intensify stakeholder’s engagement, and conclude preparations for the FCT elections scheduled for February 12th.

On the Electoral Amendment Bill before the National Assembly, Professor Yakubu appealed to legislators to give it the desired attention.

He noted that when the electoral amendment bill is passed into law, the commission would commence activities for the 2023 general election.

On the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) which commenced in June last year, the INEC boss explained that at the moment, the Commission was undertaking the most comprehensive cleaning up of the data to ensure that only eligible citizens were added to the voters’ register for the 2023 General Election.

Professor Yakubu also explained that Party primaries for the Ekiti State Governorship election are scheduled for 4th – 29th January 2022 while that of Osun State Governorship election, would hold from 16th February to 12th March this year.

He urged political parties in Ekiti and Osun States to ensure the conduct of transparent and rancour-free primaries as any primaries conducted outside the two States would not be monitored by the Commission and their outcomes would not be accepted.

The INEC boss also promised that election results would be uploaded in real-time to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal.

In a remark, the National Chairman, Inter Agency Advisory Council, IPAC, Alhaji Yabagi Sani urged INEC to sustaine the successes recorded during the Governorship election in Anambra State and correct the mistakes experience for a better performance in future elections.

Alhaji Sani also called on the Executive and Judicial arms of government, to take the issue of adequate appropriation and funding of INEC more seriously.
