The Ogun State Labour Party gubernatorial candidate, Kehinde Sogunle has urged residents of the state to join the crusade for voluntary blood donation as the world blood donors day is observed worldwide this Tuesday.
Sogunle said this in a statement by his media team on Tuesday.
He said the world blood donation day is observed to raise awareness on the need for safe blood and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.
Speaking while addressing members of his campaign council in Abeokuta the Labour Party gubernatorial candidate observed that voluntary blood donation guarantees a happier, longer life.
He said ” One blood donation can save up to three lives, while people usually donate because it feels good to help others, and altruism and volunteering have been linked to positive health outcomes, including a lower risk for depression and greater longevity”.
Sogunle also said that voluntary blood donors, particularly regular donors, are the first line of defence in preventing the transmission of HIV, hepatitis viruses and other bloodborne infections through the route of transfusion
It described the theme of the World Blood Donor Day 2022: Donating blood is an act of solidarity:Join the effort and save lives as apt as more lives are daily saved through voluntary blood donation.
He opined that a blood service that gives patients access to safe blood and blood products in sufficient quantity is a key component of an effective health system.
