Excitement has rented the air among teachers in the country as the federal government began implementation of the retirement age of teachers from 60 to 65 years .
The government also extended it to assistant education officers, and technical instructors who will all be enjoying 40 years length of seevices.
PLATFORM TIMES TIMES gathered that there was a directive for the implementation to commence on Saturday, 25th of June, 2022..
PLATFORM TIMES further gathered that the bill was sponsored by House of Representatives Minority Whips, Hon. Segun Adekoya who represents Ijebu North, Ijebu East and Ogun Waterside Federal Constituency at the National Assembly.
It was reported that many, especially teachers, have commended Hon. Adekoya for the Bill and its implementation by the government .
Most of them lauded the move , saying it would surely boost their morale, enhance productivity, and reawaken interest in and commitment to the teaching profession.
The Bill received President Mohammadu Buhari’s assent this year to enable the teaching professionals have more time to exhibit their skills in their respected fields of study.
In a directive signed by Andrew, David Adejo, the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Education Science and Technology, Abuja, it directed the teaching profession, education officers and assistant technical instructors to apply the 65 years length of service and 40 years length of services would apply irrespective to their postings.

RE: IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NEW RETIREMENT AGE AND LENGTH OF SERVICE FOR THE TEACHING PROFESSION (EDUCATION OFFICERS, ASSISTANT EDUCATION OFFICER AND TECHNICAL INSTRUCTORS)
Following the enactment of the harmonized retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Act. 2022 recently signed into law by His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari, the new retirement age of 65 years and length of service of
40 years would apply to all Education officers irrespective of their posting while emphasizing more chalk-in-hand Teachers with a view to maintaining standard, monitoring and inspectorate functions.
2. Arising from the above, there would no longer be boundaries in the implementation of the harmonized retirement age/length of service for Education
oficers/Teachers. However, those who are not interested in the elongation.
Scheme should apply for retirement from service in line with extant Public Service
3. This circular supersedes earlier circulars on the subject as the harmonized retirement Age Act. 2020 is superior to any guideline.
4. Please, bring the content of this circular to the attention of all Staff for guidance.
