The Ogun state government on Tuesday said it will arrest and prosecute landlords without receipt of payment for waste evacuation.
The state government said the receipt of payment would be evidence of subscribing to the proper waste disposal channel, adding that those without it would be charged to court for prosecution.
This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to Governor on Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya on a radio programme in Abeokuta the state capital.
Oresanya emphasised that landlords without receipt of payment would be held responsible for the indiscriminate dumping of refuse along roadsides and drainages which had contributed to the destruction of lives and properties across the state.
He noted that landlords that are found guilty would be charged to court, adding that a fine would be attached as punishment.
Oresanya said, “landlords who cannot provide receipt to show that his household is disposing their wastes through the right channel will be arrested charged to court.
“When such a person is arrested, he will be asked to show the government where he disposes of his waste, if he cannot, then he will be held responsible for the refuse along the roadsides and drainages.
“Those found guilty will be prosecuted. They will pay a fine which will be much more than what they would have paid the waste evacuators in the first place.
The Special Adviser who said environmental sanitation is everybody’s responsibility enjoined the residents to cooperate with the government to ensure proper environmental sanitation across the state.
He warned the residents against protecting perpetrators, adding that they should report and bring them to justice in order to ensure safety of lives and property.
He also warned the residents to desist from dumping refuse in drainages and water channels, saying it poses danger to their lives.
“I would advise our people to work hand in hand with the government by reporting anybody who dumps refuse waste indiscriminately.
“To bring them to justice in order to ensure the safety of lives and properties.
“Please do not dump your refuse in water bodies or gutters, think it will flow away because it won’t. Your refuse will only block another drainage.
“As a result this forces the water on the road. This is one of the reasons our roads are bad.
“Please desist from indiscriminate disposal. Report people engaging in it.” He charged
