A Pan-Yoruba Socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has faulted its leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo for allegedly differing on the collective decisions of the group on political matters .
The group cautioned Pa Adebanjo to “stop desecrating the Afenifere name and legacy”.
The group made the warning in a newspaper advertorial on Wednesday.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the statement was signed by Afenifere National leader, Prince Tajudeen Olusi; National Secretary, Hon Bayo Aina; National Treasurer, Alhaji Mutiu Are and other leaders across the Southwest region.
PLATFORM TIMES further reports that the group condemned Pa Adebanjo for backing Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of Labour Party.
They said Pa Adebanjo’s endorsement of Obi was against the decisions of the Afenifere to support Bola Tinubu, the flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress.
The statement also noted that Pa Adebanjo has been in opposition to the choice of the Pan-Yoruba group, adding that Pa Adebanjo should stop speaking on their behalves .
The statement reads in part, “In attempting to dismiss and rubbish the feat achieved by Asiwaju within the APC, Pa Adebanjo has acted contrary to age-long custom and betrayed his role as an elder. By further dragging Afenifere’s name into this ignoble act that is clearly unbecoming of an elder, he has desecrated and rubbished the illustrious legacy of his departed colleagues such as Baba Awo, Pa Ajasin, Pa Abraham Adesanya to mention a few.
“While we recognize the right of Pa Adebanjo to campaign and vote for any candidate of his choice, we strongly advise him to desist from desecrating the name and legacy of Afenifere in his bid to run down a man who has been greatly blessed by providence.
“Afenifere Egbe Ilosiwaju Yoruba totally dissociates self from the baseless endorsement of the Labour Party Presidential Candidate, HE Peter Obi by Pa Ayo Adebanjo. It represents an option that does not offer any benefit for the teeming population of the South-west, particularly those who are not ready to cut their noses to spite their faces”, the statement concluded.
