The Nigeria Medical Association, Ogun state Chapter has alleged that the federal government has failed to pay the newly approved hazard allowance to health workers.
The State Chairman of NMA, Dr. Oladayo Ogunlaja, who disclosed this in an exclusive interview with PLATFORM TIMES, noted that health workers are paid as low as N5,000 as hazard allowance.
Recall, the Federal Government, in December 2021, increased the hazard allowances applicable to health workers in its healthcare facilities across the country.
The increment was contained in a circular with reference SWC/S/04/S.218/11/406, dated December 22, 2021, from the Chairman of the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission.
“Concerning the review of the hazard allowance applicable to health workers in the services of the Federal Hospitals, Medical Centres, and Clinics in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
“The hazard allowance was reviewed from N5,000 to a flat rate between N15,000 and N34,000 for health workers on the CONHESS (Consolidated Health Salary Structure), while doctors on CONMESS had theirs reviewed from N5,000 to between N32,000 and N40,000.” the circular read in part.
Ogunlaja said despite the government increasing the hazard allowance, it has refused to commence the payment.
“For the past year, it has been signed that the hazard allowance should be increased. And as of now, nobody is enjoying the new hazard allowance.
“As of today, the hazard allowance that a doctor is entitled to is just N5,000 per month. And that is not a good motivation. The motivation for doctors to face such epidemic is low.” He said
The Chairman also expressed concern over the increasing brain drain in the health sector across the country but blamed it on low motivation by the government.
“A lot of our doctors are leaving the country. A lot of our experts are leaving the country because they are not well motivated,” he lamented.
