It is no news that the 2021-2022 season came to a close many weeks ago. However, it went down as a season that brimmed with loads of excitement, fun, tensions, shocks and unarguably, moments of sorrow and tears.
The recent big boys of the English Premier League, Manchester City managed to, once again, end the season champion, luckily escaping the heated chase from Liverpool.
With the season done and dusted, everyone is fixed on what the new season has in store for football lovers.
But then, as usual, the curtain raiser to every new season would always be the summer transfer window as clubs scamper around to reinforce and rejig their squad for, no prizes for guessing, a better performance than that of the previous season or seasons, as you may. It has been no different in the imminence of the new season as the transfer window opened on 10th June but transfer deals were restricted from being completed until 1st July for official reasons. Excitingly, big names here and there got acquired by clubs in the premier league, giving us a titillating season to look forward to with the fireworks it promises.
Here is a list of some top players in no particular order expected to cause sparks and create magic in the EPL this coming season.
ERLING HAALAND
The Danish player is one of the best young players in recent times. He started his professional career in Bryne FK in 2015 but came to the limelight during his stay at Borussia Dortmund. He also played for Molde FK and Red Bull Salzburg between 2017 and 2019. He scored a whopping 62 goals in 67 league games during his stay at Dortmund. In search of a new adventure, he joined Manchester City, the current EPL champion for a massive sum of £85.5M (plus a release clause). He is expected to light up the EPL with stunning goals and amazing performances.
MO SALAH
The joint-top scorer for last season would be expected to be at his best as always. With the departure of his fellow African, Sadio Mane, fans of Liverpool and football would want him to bring that extra spark and create more wonders to behold.
DARWIN NUNEZ
The new Liverpool man who was signed for €75M would take the position of the departed Sadio Mane. He scored 34 goals and provided 4 assists in 41 matches during his stint at Benfica. Would the Uruguayan be able to replicate this brilliance in the English premier league? The answer lies on his performance in the new season.
CRISTIANO RONALDO
This man should probably be made the 8th wonder of the world. Even at the age of 37, he still plays with so much brilliance and passion. In rumours making the rounds lately, he has been pushing for a move away from Manchester United. Interested teams like Chelsea and Bayern are looking to capitalize on his demands and claim ownership of the 5 times Ballon D’or winner. Will he stay in the EPL and keep us entertained? Or will he move to another league? We would find out in a couple of days.
HEUNG-MIN SON
Certainly, one of the most underrated players in the world. It came as a surprise that he was omitted from the EPL team of the year even after bagging 23 leagues, putting him on level terms with Mo Salah. The 29-year-old is expected to keep up his top-notch form. This hope is very prospective as his team has made some great transfers with star players like Richarlison and others arriving in North London.
BUKAYO SAKA
The 20-year-old Arsenal whizkid has been one of the greatest wonders of the EPL for the past 2 years now. This is evident with the statistics of better performance season by season. In the 2019/20 season, he featured in 26 matches and scored just one goal. In the 2020/21 season, he scored 5 goals in 32 appearances. He even did better in the just concluded season as he had 11 goals in 38 matches. We can only wish the English youngster success in the upcoming season.
MASON MOUNT
The Chelsea superstar’s career has taken a quantum leap in recent years as he has found a way to pin a starting berth in the Chelsea team. For two consecutive years, he has been named Chelsea’s player of the season. With 21 G/A in 32 matches, Chelsea fans would be looking up to him to keep firing on all cylinders for the blue side of London.
OTHER PLAYERS TO LOOK OUT FOR INCLUDE:
- Richarlison
- Gabriel Jesus
- Conor Gallagher
- Philippe Coutinho
- Kalvin Philips
- Armando Broja
With the departure of top players like Sadio Mane, Raphinha and others, we believe that the new signings will be able to bring smashing football to our screen.
