Community leaders in the Ede area of Osun State have placed a ban on the sale of cannabis otherwise known as Indian hemp within the area.
Ede is the hometown of Ademola Adeleke, governor-elect of Osun State.
The community leaders in Ede land have also called on security agencies to visit the community, burst all joints of Indian hemp and arrest the perpetrators.
The community elders made the call in a communique released after a town hall meeting held at the Ede City Hall organized to deliberate on the insecurity challenges facing the community.
The communique was signed by a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Adedayo Adeoye, Ayodele Adeyemo, Moshood Adeniyi and Basiru Oyedemi.
“Security agency in charge of controlling illicit drugs was put to task and was admonished to make sure that weed joints are eradicated forthwith from all nooks and crannies of Edeland. The culprits should be arrested and sanctioned accordingly,” the communique reads.
The community leaders claimed that most of the crime recorded in the community was perpetrated under the influence of hard drugs.
“It was observed that the root of the most criminal activities is the consumption of Indian hemp and other hard drugs. As a response to this menace, efforts should be made to discourage the sales and consumption of Indian hemp openly with impunity,” the communique added.
They however recommended good welfare for local security operatives in the community to continue protecting the community from criminals.
“The Summit recommended that local hunters should be encouraged to improve on their services to the community. They should, therefore, be given assistance in the form of regular stipends to enhance their living,” the communique stated.
“Needed and required equipment should be provided to the local hunters to enhance their performance. Indigenes are enjoined not to abandon, neglect, and or leave their ancestral homes to avoid being hijacked by hoodlums, vagabonds and bandits,” it added.
