The Ogun State Police Command has arrested four suspected armed robbers and recovered some weapons allegedly used in terrorising residents of Ajuwon and environs in Ifo local government area of Ogun State.
The Police on Wednesday, in a statement said It was reported that the six members of a syndicate had been terrorising motorcycle riders by snatching motorcycles at gunpoint.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state ,SP, Abimbola Oyeyemi disclosed this in the statement on Wednesday.
Oyeyemi said policemen in Ajuwon Division led by the DPO, SP Andrew Akinseye, raided the hideout and arrested them .
He said police hit a distress call of attack on one Sunday Doile at Onibudo area of Akute where his Bajaj Motorcycle was snatched a gun point.
He said four of the suspects were apprehended while two others took to their heels on the arrival of the police.
The police spokesman said his men recovered criminal weapons like pistols, cutlass, iron rod, live and expenses cartridges from them .
The statement reads in part, “Operatives of Ogun state Police Command in the early hours of Monday 24th of October 2022, arrested four notorious armed robbery suspects, who specialized in snatching motorcycle from owners at gun point.
“The suspects, 20 years old Muhammad Adamu, 22 years old Okacha Alidu, 28 years old Yusuf Mohammed and 20 years old Muniru Sunmaila were arrested following a distress call received at Ajuwon police divisional headquarters at about 3 a.m, that the suspects were operating and had attacked one Sunday Doile at Onibudo area of Akute and snatched his Bajaj motorcycle on gun point.
“On sighting the policemen, the hoodlums who are about six in number took to their in different directions, while one of them escaped with the snatched motorcycle. Others were hotly chased, and four amongst them were apprehended.
“Recovered from them are; two locally made pistols, one iron rod, one cutlass, one live cartridge, three expended cartridges and assorted Criminal charms”, The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi detailed our correspondent.
He added that when interrogated; the suspects had confessed to the crime, revealed their mode of operation and confessed to have killed a victim in one of their operations.
He said, “On interrogation, they confessed been the syndicate responsible for various cases of motorcycle snatching in Ajuwon and its environs.
“They confessed further that their mode of operation is to use a motorcycle belonging to one of them to cross the one they want to snatch, and they will show their gun to the victim and ordered him to surrender his motorcycle.
“According to them, any of their victims who struggle with them will be hit on the head with an iron rod, and the motorcycle will be taken away while the owner is unconscious. They claimed to have killed one of their victims in the process.” He revealed.
On this development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to State Criminal Investigation Departments for discreet investigation.
He also directed that the escaped members of the gang must be hunted for wherever they might be.
