An Ogun State magistrate court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta on Thursday sentenced a 22-year-old man, Kehinde Obafunke to one year imprisonment for stealing four phones and a cash sum of fifteen thousand naira.
Kehinde was said to have committed the offence on the 2nd August, 2022 at about 11:00 am at Brewery, under Bridge near Odo-Ogun River, Lafenwa, Abeokuta.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that Kehinde and others at large stole one Gionee phone and three Tecno phones and cash sum of N15,000 from one Abba Esa, Yayah Hassan and Gadafi Halilu.
The defendant, who pleaded guilty to the charge against him, explained that, “he was living with his mother where he was learning carpentery work before his mother stopped him from going.”
He further said, “On that day, he left his house to visit his friend at Lafenwa and then they went to swim at Odo-Ogun River and they stole items of other divers but when he was arrested the stolen item wasn’t found on him.”
Delivering judgment, chief magistrate O.M Somefun considering that the defendant is a first offender, said the court will temper justice with mercy.
Consequently, the court sentenced him to one year imprisonment with a fine option of three month community service.
