A woman, Titilayo Olamodi has prayed an Ogun State Customary Court sitting in Quarry road, Agbeloba, Abeokuta, the state capital for dissolution of her five-year-old marriage with Sunday Olomodi over constant battering.
The plaintiff told the court that despite beating her, Olamodi has neglected his responsibility as a father towards his two children and towards her as a wife.
She noted that each time he beats her, the defendant tells her he could kill her without anybody questioning him.
She said, “My lord, I brought this case before the court because he beats me, he does not take care of our children. He said I should take the responsibility of being the father and mother of the children.
“He does not also come home to sleep, each time I call him to ask for money for the upkeep of the children he would tell me to take care of the children by myself and hang up the call.
“We had an issue in the previous apartment we rented, he was having an affair with a lady in the house, it got to the extent that I and the lady ended up having a serious fight. He told the lady to beat and arrest me I lose my front tooth to that fight. And we had to Vacate that apartment for another to avoid further issues.
“We vacated the building for another place and I noticed that something of such was looming and I called his attention to it avoid another issue repeating itself, immediately I mentioned it to him, he responded to me with a slap and had to rush out of the house so as not to start another round of beating.
“Also, I heard that he had an accident and I called him severally but he kept on hanging up the call each time he saw my phone number, except he does not find out on time but when he eventually finds he would hang up the call. He even went to my mother’s house to insult her.”
Reacting to the allegations, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the allegations saying he takes care of the children when he has the money and he did not interfere in the fight between her and their neighbour.
“I am a truck driver, I work at Ijebu, Isara and Ibadan. Whenever I go out to work, she does not believe I went to work. That led to our constant quarrel then, when I beat her, but that has been settle a long time ago.
“Also, recently when I had an accident, she didn’t bother to check on me, she only sends beep calls and she does not answer the call whenever I return them.
“On the allegation that I do not take care of the children, she lied against me, I take care of the children, I only stopped when I had this accident because I have not been working.
“When she called me for the children’s feeding money, I told her to sort herself since she has been taken care of them without checking up on me while I was ill, so she should continue taking care of the children.”
Delivering judgement, the president, Hon. M.A Mabinuori said, “The two parties are sent back home to families and friends for amicable settlement before the next adjournment date.
The suit was hereby adjourned till 16th of November, 2022.”
