The Olota of Ota, Oba Abdukabir Obalanlege on Wednesday, said he would not tolerate vote buying and selling in his rea in the coming elections.
Obalanlege made the disclosure in his Ota palace while briefing newsmen on the 2022 edition of the Iganmode Festival which is billed to hold between December 12th and 18th, 2022.
Iganmode festival is celebrated by the people of Awori of Ota in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the State to project its culture and tradition.
The Monarch said the theme of this year’s festival is, “Culture, Communal Security and Patriotism”.
Obalanlege noted that the Otta people are conscious and enlightened enough to determine who governs them, saying that such will prevent them from selling their votes and their future to the highest bidder in the course of elections.
Olota stressed that his arm will be wide open to receive any party candidate who visits his palace during the campaign but would not condone attempts to persuade residents of Ota to vote against their conscience or choices.
His words: “Gone were the days when you buy votes. Our people are now conscious of the fact that it is time to determine who governs them. If you have money as a politician, bring it to Ota, we will spend it and we will vote according to our conscience.
“We will vote for people we believe will be able to lead us in the right direction. We are not going to vote for people that will lead us astray. If you like to bring your money, I can tell you that you can no longer buy our votes and our conscience,” he said.
Speaking on the coming festival, Obalanlege noted that the Omo Iganmode festival is more important in a time when Otta Olaland is currently facing security challenges like other communities in Nigeria.
Olota who stated that the nation must tackle the scourge of insecurity with everything within its arsenal, tasked the Federal government to stop the menace of kidnapping and banditry before they end the country’s existence.
“For me, it is in our collective interest to tackle the scourge of insecurity with everything in our arsenal. We cannot look on while our economic, historical and spiritual antecedents and heritage are pillaged by a few of our social misfits called armed robbers, kidnappers, cattle rustlers and killer herdsmen take us for granted and assault us.
“They are not spirits and we must fight them to a standstill. We cannot fold our arms and allow them a free rein. You and I have a responsibility to stop them before they stop us. They have already cast a great slur on our unity and a big doubt on our claim to patriotism”.
