Delta state government, through the ministry of justice, has debunked the alleged data making round on the internet being the numbers for human trafficking for Ika South local government of the state.
The state Attorney General and Commissioner for justice, Barr. Isaiah Bozimo disclosed this on Wednesday in a press briefing in Asaba, the state capital.
Barr. Bozimo while reacting to the alleged data, described the purported figure as incorrect and untrue.
Bozimo clarify that the actual data as obtained from the National Agency for the prohibition of trafficking in persons (NAPTIP) from 2004 to October 2022 is 929 and that it covers the entire 25 local government area of the state.
He enjoined the public to disregard any report that is not verified from NAPTIP as earlier reported by some media that Ika South axis of the state have the highest data of human trafficking in persons with total number of trafficked in persons as 929.
Barr. Isaiah, however, warned that journalists should not publish figures without verified sources, not to mislead the public.
He added that the state government is doing everything humanly possible to ensure the figure is reduced and from second in the rank.
He revealed that the state government has setup Delta state taskforce in human trafficking and irregular migration to act as a meeting point for all the relevant Law Enforcement Agencies, Civil Society Organizations,, and Ministries Departments, and Agencies to coordinate efforts in the fight against human trafficking.
When responding to the contribution of the social media in human trafficking, he frowned at the negative use of the social media which he said has also contributed in the increase in human trafficking with bad elements taking advantage of it to disseminate crime, and using it to groom, lure and brainwashed the unsuspected members of the public.
