The Ogun State Police Command said it will resist every temptation to indulge in corrupt practices in the 2023 elections.
This was contained in a communique released after a retreat organised for senior police officers of the command in Abeokuta at the weekend with the theme: Creating The Enabling Environment for a Free, Fair and Credible 2023 General Elections In Ogun State.
The Police Commissioner in the state, CP Lanre Bankole affirmed that corruption has been the bane of electoral process in Nigeria since democracy even as he vowed that the command would vehemently resist such in the coming exercise.
Bankole also vowed that the command would not hesitate to clamp down on any miscreants or hoodlums who attempt to disrupt the elections.
The communique reads in part, “The Ogun state police command will provide adequate and robust security coverage at all polling units, electoral centers, INEC offices in all the 20 Local Government Areas of the state as well as provide security of lives and properties to all Nigerians living in every part of Ogun state before, during and after the elections.
“The electoral Act 2022 as amended has effectively vested sufficient power on the Nigeria police as far as elections are concerned, especially the 2023 elections.
“In ensuring that the elections are free, fair and indeed successful, in line with this provision, officers and men of the state police command rose with determination to jealousy guide the 2023 elections from the beginning to the end.
“Guiding and escorting all electoral officers, INEC staff and all adhoc officers in the course of performing their constitutional mandate before, during and after the election. We will ensure that all voters cast their votes peacefully and return to their homes without any harm.
“We will ensure that miscreants and hoodlums are not allowed to disrupt the process as the police will be firm in dealing with any threat posed to the peaceful conduct of the elections.
“Corruption has been the bane of all previous elections in Nigeria from 1999 till date in all facets of our national life, as far as the 2023 elections are concerned, officers and members of the Ogun state police command will resist every temptation to corruption.
Earlier, the state Governor Dapo Abiodun charged the police commissioner to take ruthless action against political thugs in the forthcoming elections.
Abiodun vowed that his administration would deal ruthlessly with any act of thuggery capable of causing insecurity in the state.
“We will deal ruthlessly with any act of thuggery, I have instructed the Commissioner of Police and the State Director of Security to be on top of the situation. Our state will not be known for thuggery, cultism and all these types of vices,” he said.
He urged the senior police officers to use the conference as an opportunity to come up with ways, means and strategies for avoiding violence as we approach the 2023 general elections.
