A Professor of Public Health, at the University of Ilorin, Tanimola Akande has warned Nigerians against the intake of unhealthy meat especially the ones exposed by the roadside.
Prof. Akande warned that exposed meat naturally attracts house flies which are vectors of germs that are hazardous to human health when consumed.
The University Don who spoke exclusively with PLATFORM TIMES charged consumers to ensure hygienic practices when cooking meats.
According to Public Health expert, exposed meat by meat sellers naturally attracts houseflies which are vectors of various germs (bacteria).
“The germs are potentially hazardous and through this, diseases like dysentery and other diarrhea diseases are easily transmitted.
“Consumers should also ensure such meat is properly washed and well cooked to prevent being infected.”
Prof. Akande advocated for public enlightenment to prevent food-borne diseases.
He said, “these diseases can be prevented by educating the meat vendors on the dangers of exposing meat they are selling, and encouraging, them to always cover such meat.
He, however, charged Sanitary inspectors to ensure food safety across the country.
“Sanitary Inspectors have a role to play in ensuring that meat sellers don’t expose the meat to flies.
“Conditions that encourage the breeding of houseflies should be prevented.” He advised
