Twenty-four hours after the national chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu visited the burnt office in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Police Command has placed a bounty of N2.5 million on the hoodlums who set the INEC Office ablaze.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, who spoke with PLATFORM TIMES disclosed that the command is putting it’s best to clamp down on the arsonists in order to forestall a repetition of such occurrence.
He revealed that the command has placed a bounty of N2.5 Million on the hoodlums for anyone who has information on the wanted arsonists.
He added that the security situation is however under control as investigations are still on in the attempt to know the hoodlums and bring them to justice.
In his words, “We are still investigating the case of the arsonists and we have placed a bounty of N2.5M on them for anyone who has information on how we can capture them. The Command would issue a statement on it by tomorrow,” Abimbola said.
PLATFORM TIMES recalls the arson which occured on 10rh of November at the Iyana Mortuary branch of the Commission Office.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Niyi Ijalaye, had said that the electoral violence in the Abeokuta South Local Government Area of the State, led to the destruction of electoral materials which include 65,699 PVCs, 904 ballot boxes, 29 voting cubicle, 8 generators amongst others.
The REC explained that the destroyed cards were existential and not the just produced cards from the CVR, adding that the commission was already collating details of destroyed PVCs and making efforts to reprint them.
He said, “The cards were not abandoned, they were waiting for collection. We went on air to do sensitization, calling our people to come and collect their cards.
“Those cards were cards we had in existence in time past dating back to 2011, 2015 and 2019, they didn’t involve cards under the CVR that were just conducted, but, be that as it may, I must tell you that we are collating the details of those cards and very soon the replacement copies would be ready.” He assured.
It was on this bearing that the Ogun State Police Command had taken up the task to nab the suspected arsonists.
