Delta State Governor and Vice Presidential Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, Sen. (Dr)Ifeanyi Okowa has reiterated his administration’s commitment to the financial autonomy of the judiciary and the legislative arms of Government.
Okowa stated this at the meeting of the Body of Attorneys-General of States of the Federation at the Unity Hall, Old Government House, Asaba.
Okowa who was represented by his Deputy, Deacon Kingsley Burutu Otuaro, pointed out that in 2021, the governor signed into law the Delta State judiciary’s Fund Management ( Financial Autonomy) which marked a critical first step for the independent control of the judiciary’s internal fiscal management and appropriations.
According to him, “I remain resolute supporting the notion that judiciary finance should be free of interference from the executive branch of Government.
This is because agitating for the rule of law will be a mere lip service without a guarantee of Independence for the judiciary.” he said.
He maintained that the present administration had made efforts to build capacity to enhance staff efficiency.
He further stated that the Ministry of Justice has embarked on a series of training programs for its legal officers in Arbitration, Legal Drafting, Case Management, Civil Litigation, and Information Communication Technology.
While charging the law officers to contribute to the development in their various state, Okowa said, “During your deliberations,i urge you not to lose sight of the fact that public service provides an incredible opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the people.
As Chief law officers, advisors prosecutors, and executive legislative drafters, you must not lose sight of the impact of your position and contribution to the development of your various States and development aspirations as a country, especially, in poverty eradication through legislation which can serve to combat the casual elements of poverty.”, he stated .
Speaking earlier , the chairman of the Body of Attorneys—General of States of Federation, Mr. Moyosore Onibanjo (SAN.) noted that judiciary in the States of Federation have been starred in the right direction towards Justice , fairness, equality for all under the law, adding that when there is fairness, justices equality agitations would drastically be reduced.
He urged the participants, colleagues, and Chief legal officers in their respective States to give their best to have a robust deliberation.
He noted that the communique that would be issued at the end of the meeting would address certain area of the laws bothering on relationship with institutions and authorities would be clearer.

Justice, Commended his Counterparts from across the country who were in attendance at the event.
He commended stakeholders including the Governor of Delta State, whom he said have taken proactive steps in the reformation of the administration of Justice system in the state.
