The Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency has warned Ogun State motorists and residents against carrying petrol cans while in transit, saying, it may lead to havoc.
The TRACE Commander/Chief Executive, Cdr. ‘Seni Ogunyemi said this in a statement issued in Abeokuta, stressing that more caution should be taken as the peak of the ’ember’ months begins .
According to Ogunyemi, bearing petrol in jerry cans inside moving vehicles or while on commercial motorcycle is dangerous and may speed up havoc.
He added that queues would be monitored in order to reduce traffic in different areas of the state, as he emphasized particularly on Abeokuta.
He also disclosed that the agency has been directed to help any motorist whose car breaks down due to insufficient fuel.
He said, “Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, TRACE, has admonished the general public, particularly the motoring public (private and commercial), against driving vehicles with loaded containers filled with petroleum products in view of it’s attendant consequences.
“Though the country is experiencing the challenge of fuel distribution, which has resulted into queues at filling stations across the state, it is risky and dangerous for motorists, especially commercial bus and taxi drivers to move around petroleum products in jerry cans inside the booths of vehicles and on passenger seats.
“As the Ember Months peak, with the dry season setting in, it is also risky and dangerous for drivers to carry fuel in jerry cans and bottles while on transit, as this may speed up havoc of immense proportion.
“TRACE operatives have been directed to assist motorists whose vehicles breakdown on the road due to insufficient fuel, along and around filling stations and other road users whose movement are hindered and also caused untold hardship, as a result of reckless parking, in addition to driving against traffic, which is prevalent at major traffic flash point of the state.”
