The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned the federal government against the removal of subsidy on petrol without making local refinery functional.
Speaking on the continuous issue of the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal government, NLC president Ayuba Wabba said “organized Labour maintains its opposition to ending subsidies on imported petroleum products.
Wabba explained that it will multiply the hardship facing Nigerians.
“He said in oil and gas, we have a comparative advantage but today, it is an insult in the country despite being a major oil producing country in the world.
“He further said, no country in the world among member countries imports 100% of what they use except Nigeria. Why? because of our incentive that a lot of corrupt leaders benefit from when import is done.
“They will sell lots and continue to import, and we will continue to be in cycle.
The NLC expressed its desire to mobilize workers in the 2023 general election to vote for candidates that are ready to implement the economic and social policies that will promote the welfare of its members.
The Kwara state governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq said the current N30,000 minimum Wage is no longer a living wage due to the inflationary trend in the country.
“He said from the minimum wage, the government is still taking taxes as well, the challenge for the government is to engage more people to work.
The participants at the Conference infuriated that knowledge acquisition by union leaders on ways to handle labour issues is the key to industrial harmony in the country.
