Niger Bridge Designed To Ease Traffic Flow, Not Death Trap, FRSC Warns Motorists

Following preparation to Open the Second Niger Bridge, the Anambra State Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned motorists against speeding on the Second Niger Bridge saying the opening is to ease traffic flow and not to serve as a death trap.

The Sector Commander, Adeoye Irelewuyi who spoke at a media chat disclosed that the bridge would be opened to ensure hitch-free traffic before, during, and after Christmas and New Year celebrations.

He unveiled that the three kilometer bridge would be opened on Thursday, being 15th of December, 2022, to ease transportation during the yuletide.

He urged the road users to avoid drinking while driving, recklessness and speeding especially while plying the Second Niger Bridge as it’s new state may be tempting to motorists.

Irelewuyi added that the Commission would ensure to station it’s men in strategic locations in the length and breadth of the bridge to prevent road users from exploiting the smoothness of the bridge.

According to the Sector Commander, “the temporary opening of the bridge is a welcome development and will definitely be a big relief. We look forward to more free traffic flow and shorter travel time.

“We appeal to the motoring public not to over speed. They should resist the temptation of pressing the pedal to the floor. It’s a very dangerous practice. It’s an abnormality of the human factor.

“We have mapped out deployment points for the periods. We’re going to ensure that normal speed is maintained to avoid a situation where a scheme designed to ease traffic flow will now become a death trap.”

“We will also be deploying all our resources, including our 2 trucks, one on each bridge, in case of any breakdown of vehicles.

We are also deploying our ambulances for quick emergency response, one will be permanently stationed on the bridge.

We’re going to work with other agencies, especially security personnel because we are mindful of some crime prone areas.

“We are fully prepared to handle the traffic situation because we’re expecting a higher density of traffic flow,” He added.
