The Nigeria Police Force has warned all politicians and political parties to cease from actions that could hamper the coming 2023 General Election.
The police stipulated that politicians and their political parties should avoid unruly behaviour that could disrupt the electoral processes as election should be a process for providing competent governance.
The Force Public Relation Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said that the polls must be free and fair, urging the political parties to involve security agencies in their rallies and campaigns in order to avoid violence.
Adejobi made this statement in Ibadan at the closing of 2022 annual conference of Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Public Relations Officers and Strategic Communication Experts with the theme ‘Strengthening Strategic Communication Towards Police Reforms, Security and Integrity of 2023 elections’.
He said, “Nigeria has not ripen to a stage where two political parties will be having their rallies at same venue without clash.
“So, we need to guide them so as to have a seamless electoral process.” Adejobi stated.
Adejobi said the purpose of the conference was to redefine Nigerian Police strategic plan towards the 2023 General Elections and beyond.
He added that a document would be sent to direct security agencies for the implementation of the strategic plan.
“We took the PROs on certain topic on communication and conflict management communication crisis, they are now renewed officers because they have taken what they need to be more efficient on duty when they get back to their respective offices.
“The message of the IGP to the PROs is the need to use adequate, quick and effective communication skills to address some conflict facing the country and address security challenges”, he said.
He also mentioned that Communication is critically needed in managing security challenges as it is a dynamic approach in tackling insecurity in the country.
“It’s not all the time that we need to use kinetic approach in tackling insecurity in Nigeria, we want to go towards using unkinetic approach of tackling insecurity which communication can not be left out because it is crucial and critical in managing security challenges in the nation and that is why we are focusing on spokesperson of the Police across the nation,” he said.
He concluded that the knowledge acquired at the conference would assist the IGP and his management team in executing most of their policies towards repositioning the Police.
