No fewer than seven persons on Wednesday, lost their lives during a car explosion aroundOdogbolu junction along Sagamu/ Benin expressway in Ijebu Ode axis of Ogun state.


PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the accident occured when a 15-passenger Mazda bus with registration number AGL 886 YD suddenly burst into flames due to engine oil overflow along the highway.

PLATFORM TIMES further gathered that the victims were all women except the driver who escaped during the accident.

While seven persons were burnt beyond recognition at the scene of the incident, seven other victims who sustained varying degrees of injury were rushed to the general hospital, Ijebu-Ode for treatment.


Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Traffic Compliance and Endorsement Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the accident occurred about 02: 50 pm on Wednesday.

He noted that a total of seven females were burnt beyond recognition while seven others were injured but, the driver escaped in the accident.


Akinbiyi noted that the explosion involves 14 females and a male who was the driver.


He said, “according to eyewitness accounts, the lone fatal crash was coming from Kosofe area of Lagos inbound Epe, for a church revival to use in the new year, when its engine suddenly caught fire due to engine overflow.

“The number of passengers in the commercial bus was 15, out of which seven females were burnt to death, while the remaining seven were seriously burnt and taken to Ijebu-Ode General Hospital for treatment. However, the driver of the bus escaped.”

He added that the accidented Mazda bus had been taken to Odogbolu Motor Traffic Division.

He said “While TRACE commiserates with the families of the deceased and also wishes the injured speedy recovery, motorists are urged to maintain and service their vehicles regularly, in addition to carrying out daily routine checks on the vehicle to correct any anomaly before setting out on a journey.”

The PRO noted that traffic was affected as at the time of the incident but with intervention TRACE and FRSC the traffic was gradually subdued while the injured were rescued to the General Hospital Ijebu-Ode.
