Again, angry relatives on Tuesday descended heavily on a medical worker and some other female staff at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta after losing their family member.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that pandemonium broke out on Tuesday morning after a female patient died after 19 days of care in the facility.
The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Ogun State Chapter, Dr. Kunle Ashimi in a statement issued to PLATFORM TIMES said the patient had died of lasting injuries from the beating she had suffered from the assailants who attacked her following an altercation with loan sharks at her home.
Ashimi said, “Doctors were called by a colleague at the NHIS desk on the morning of Friday 16th to accept for emergency dialysis the patient .
“They had no other medical information till night but we prepared for all eventualities.
“The doctors remained on standby till she arrived at night, as they were said to have had ambulance delays. We kept making calls to confirm she was still in a viable state as we had no information from the team bringing her in for over six hours
“Her biochemical parameters on arrival would ordinarily be deemed not compatible with life but the team resuscitated and met favourable response to prepare for dialysis
“Four dialysis sessions were done under the insurance cover for the NHIS/NYSC (the family will have been set back by over N140,000 for the dialysis sessions alone). They were aware she would have two more sessions covered by the insurance scheme.
“Clinical and nonclinical staff of goodwill, seeing the state of the indigent mother, contributed personal funds to help with some of the aspects of care not covered by the insurance scheme.
“The two most senior residents in the department remained on standby throughout the period she had been on admission, apart from the managing consultants and teams
“She had recorded a clinical improvement in the blood parameters managed with dialysis but she had lasting injuries from the beating she had suffered from the assailants who attacked her reportedly following an altercation with loan sharks at her home
“She died on the morning of 3rd January and her relatives reportedly descended on a female attendant who is not directly linked to her treatment or management, beat the innocent bystander, and chased other female staff on the ward to attack them on the first-floor corridors of the medical ward. She died after about 19 days of care.”
