Ogun State Government has read the riot act to principals and teachers in the State Public primary and secondary schools ,warning them against creating crisis over the use of Hijab .
This development came as the League of Imams and Alfas has directed female muslim students in public schools in the State and willing to use hijab to start adorning themselves hijab from Monday 9th January, 2022 as they resume for 2nd term of 2022/2023 session.
The league had said in a statement signed by its Secretary General, Sheikh Tajudeen Adewunmi, on Tuesday that the use of hijab will begin on January 9, 2023, when students return for their second term.
The league also said only “desiring and willing female Muslim students could wear a white-coloured shoulder-length cape Hijab as they resume for the second term of the 2022-2023 academic session on Monday, January 9, 2023, and henceforth without any fear of molestation or punishment.”
PLATFORM TIMES gathered from sources who attended a meeting summoned by the Commissioner for Education Science and Technology, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu that the government has cleared the air on the hijab matter .
The meeting was reportedly held with zonal education officers, executives of principals, teachers and non-teachers associations across the State.
The Commissioner was reported to have cautioned its staff in public schools from stopping any students from using hijab and anyone found culpable will face the consequence.
Multiple sources at the meeting said Professor Arigbabu asked the principals and teachers in the State public schools to focus on their official assignment of impacting knowledge and not preach religion or try to convert students to another religion.
According to the source, Professor Arigbabu asked the representatives of the officials of Ministry of Education, principals, teachers and non-teachers to take the message to others in their various schools.
He told them that there is no circular that prevents the use of hijab in public schools and students should be allowed to practise religion of their parents.
Meanwhile ,the league of Imams and Alfas at a meeting held with Muslim parents held at the Egba Central mosque ,Kobiti Abeokuta on Saturday resolved that use of Hijab by female muslim students commences Monday ,January 9, 2023 .
The league in the communique issued at the 3nd of the meeting also declared that it might not hesitate to take legal actions against “anyone who engages in any form of provocation, victimization, or harassment against any Muslim girl because of the use of hijab.”
“The government is urged to call overzealous staff and agencies to order to allow the peaceful coexistence that we all enjoy in the state to continue to flourish as we respect each other’s rights.
