Four months after she delivered of her child, a housewife, Ramota Ogunlana had yet to leave the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Ogun state over her inability to settle outstanding medical bills of N250,685 out of N295,685 incurred at the hospital.
Ogunlana, who delivered of a girl through surgery on September 24 in the state teaching hospital, has been begging for help to raise the balance and cater to the child.
PLATFORM TIMES learned that the baby was delivered preterm (seven months) and was discharged in November but both mother and child were still in the hospital.
Ogunlana told PLATFORM TIMES that due to the hash economic situation in the country, the family needed the goodwill of Nigerians to take care of the baby
When PLATFORM TIMES visited the hospital, the nursing mother, who was looking pale and depressed, was using a ward inside the hospital with no medical facilities.
She said, “I had the baby through surgery but the baby was born prematurely. And I was charged N156,020 and the baby was charged N139,635. My husband has no means because he lost his job a few months after I became pregnant and had been working with a block factory with little to bring home. He has tried everything possible to raise part of the bill but all his efforts have been abortive.
“I am from Ogbere in Ogun State. I am a hairdresser and my husband is currently unemployed after he lost his job at a quarry company. We had used all his saving to take care of the pregnancy needs and now we have nothing.
“I have been detained in the hospital for four months now but have no means of paying the hospital bills. I have N250,655 to be paid as some social workers who visited the hospital helped out with N45,000.
“I want the government to help pay the balance of the hospital bills and also help us with necessities for the babies. I need empowerment and my husband needs employment.
“I want Nigerians to also help to pay the bills for us to be discharged from the hospital.”
