Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP House of representatives Candidate vying to represent Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, Chief Toyin Amuzu, has lamented that state governments through their overbearing influence have allegedly deliberately crippled the local government system across the country.
He complained that the situation has purportedly laid the foundation for the current widespread insecurity and infrastructure deficit among others.
Amuzu also said Ogun State is also a victim, as the Local Government system is not functional and is as good as dead in the State.
Chief Amuzu who stated this during his tour of ward 14 in Onikolobo-Adigbe area of Abeokuta South Local Government said he is supporting local government autonomy as the closest tier of government to the people, which can facilitate development.
He said the grass-root democracy is needed to give the vast majority of the people the fullest opportunity to participate in determining their own destiny.
According to him, “the last time Ogun people witnessed a functional local government system was during a PDP tenure when the LGs were given the opportunity to work. Since then the dictatorial attitude of the governors who are more interested in collecting the LG allocations have led to the systemic decay and destruction of the local government”.
Chief Amuzu maintained that the ongoing constitutional amendment seeking to allocate more powers to the local government was a step in the right direction, as there is a strong nexus between effective local governance and sustainable development.
He said, “an effective local authority would address poverty, hunger, inequality, insecurity, illiteracy and other challenges currently facing the nation”.
