… Seeks Support On Border Defence
Sodiq Mojibola
The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Idis Isah, has stated that bandits and foreigners are two steps ahead of the Immigration Service as a result of lack of sophisticated defence mechanisms.
He made this known on Thursday, during his visit to a defence solution manufacturing company at Iperu Remo, Ogun State.
He stated that criminals and bandits who illegally migrate into the country are well oriented about the landscape and defence of the border which makes it difficult for the service to forestall their trangression.
He added that the Service therefore, needs to procure sophisticated mechanisms such as armoured vehicles that can wheather the storm of desert and run through hills and muddy areas in the Nigerian borders in order to prevent further trangression ahead of the election.
He stated that the election would be distorted if foreigners and bandits are not stopped at the borders before entering into the country, reiterating that the role of the immigration service is pivotal to the defence and security of the country.
The Comptroller General charged the Managing Director of the defense Solution manufacturing company, Adetokunbo Ogundeyin to manufacture armoured vehicles, weapons and safety mechanisms for it’s personnel in view of defending the country from external aggression.
In his words, “I want all officers and men to continue to be of good conduct, always and pay utmost attention to the security awareness, most especially as we approach the elections.
“We guide the borders as a border agency, and we must not allow non-Nigerians to enter the country and partake in the election. We must be on the watch out to not allow anyone who does not have the permission to vote to be seen around the election site at all.
“Additionally, I challenge the PROFORCE to think about what they can do to fortify the NIS. Produce smart vehicles to be able to defend the borders very well.
“Produce a vehicle that is able to go anywhere; be it desert or hills. We need this kind of vehicle in the NIS for effective defence of the country.
“All of us must contribute to the security of this nation. Like I said earlier on, the NIS is the gatekeeper and we are in the gateway city.”
“I assure you we are going to patronize. There is no need for us to go outside to buy ammunition. The Federal Government has budgeted billions of naira to procure arms.
.
“The process to procure arms is cumbersome. For almost two years, we couldn’t procure arms, because of the process involved.
“Only our nation has no arms in the service. The confidence of the criminals is the fire power they have, that’s their only confidence.
“I therefore, challenge the PROFORCE to think about what they can do to fortify the NIS. Produce smart vehicles to be able to defend the borders very well.
