The Federation of Women Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Ogun State Chapter, has lamented the low turnout for the collection of Permanent Voters Cards, (PVCs) to enable Nigerians to vote in the 2023 general elections.
Recalled, the state Residential Electoral Commissioner, Niyi Ijalaye had in December, while giving an update on the PVC collection in the state, reported that 400,000 Permanent Voter Cards, (PVCs) had not been collected in the state.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the REC, the Secretary of the Association, Aishat Adebiyi, described the development as a factor that could mar the election of rightful leaders into power during the 2023 general election.
She added that there was a need for the uncollected PVCs to be claimed to enable the owners to get involved in the electoral process.
She said, “we are here to pay a courtesy visit to the REC of INEC to inform the INEC of our activities as a group. We are observers for the collection of PVC.
“And to let people know that it is very good for every individual to collect their PVCs because,it is a ticket to choose the best governor to govern our state and the best president to have a better Nigeria.
“At the initial stage, the turnout was massive but as time goes on, we observed that many people are yet to collect their PVC. There are still many uncollected PVCs at INEC offices in most of the Local Government Areas of the state.”
On her part, the state Ameerah of FOMWAN, Alhaja Zainab Jinadu charged the residents to collect their PVCs to exercise their civic rights.
She said, “I will encourage the residents to come out to collect their PVCs. They are readily available. This is necessary for us to choose the right leader for our dear state and nation.”
The Ogun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Niyi Ijalaye, while hosting the representatives of FOMWAN, lamented the nonchalant attitudes of residents towards the collection of PVCs across the state.
He stressed that the electoral body had stipulated the time for collection of PVCs but many did not turn out for it.
He, however, charged the FONWAN to continue with its mandates and appealed to residents of the state to seize the opportunity to approach the nearest INEC office in their local government areas and collect their PVCs.
