The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) disclosed this in a circular dated June 6, issued by Dr. Aliyu Tanko, NAHCON’s Coordinator in Makkah.
According to the circular, the detained pilgrims were found outside their hotels without the mandated identification.
The NUSUK card, introduced by Saudi authorities, is critical for verifying authorized participants in the Hajj pilgrimage.
This identification measure, as reported by the Daily Trust, was implemented to prevent issues experienced in previous years.
Notably, last year, the lack of proper identification led to illegal pilgrims overcrowding Mina camps, resulting in some Nigerian pilgrims being deprived of the services they had paid for.
Dr. Tanko’s communication emphasized the importance of collecting and using the NUSUK ID cards to avoid arrests, particularly with the upcoming month of Dhul Hijjah.
He urged all States Muslim Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards (SMPWB) and tour operators to ensure their pilgrims are fully aware of this requirement.
The necessity of carrying these cards at all times cannot be overstated, as they grant access to essential services during the Hajj.
In addition to physical cards, pilgrims are encouraged to download the NUSUK app to access digital copies of their IDs.
NAHCON highlighted the severe penalties for not possessing the required Hajj permits, which include a fine of SR10,000, six months’ imprisonment, deportation, and a ten-year ban from Saudi Arabia.
Dr. Tanko’s appeal to the SMPWB and tour operators underscores the critical nature of adherence to these guidelines to prevent any disruptions during the pilgrimage.
