The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned that the 2027 general elections will not be an easy ride, insisting that the party is bracing for a hard-fought contest despite its current dominance in the country’s political space.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, dismissed insinuations that the ruling party is seeking to cripple the opposition ahead of the polls, describing such claims as unfounded and lacking in objective analysis.
Speaking in Abuja, Morka maintained that the APC was merely carrying out its constitutional role as a political party by mobilising support, engaging the electorate, and expanding its membership base.
He argued that the party remained committed to democratic principles, including freedom of association, stressing that the influx of new members into the APC was voluntary and not the result of inducement or coercion.
“What is so desperate about a political party pursuing its legitimate objective?” he queried, insisting that political competition is the essence of democracy and not evidence of desperation or anti-democratic conduct.
According to him, the APC has no interest in stifling opposition parties, adding that Nigerians are free to join any political platform of their choice.
Morka also dismissed allegations that the party was inducing governors and other political actors to defect, saying such claims do not hold water.
He cited the example of politicians who have moved between parties, arguing that such decisions are often driven by internal crises and lack of cohesion within their former platforms.
On allegations linking political actor Nyesom Wike to the APC’s internal strategies, Morka said the FCT Minister remains a Nigerian citizen with constitutional rights to political association and expression.
Turning to the opposition, Morka said former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi do not pose any electoral threat to President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
He maintained that the APC is not underestimating any opposition party but is instead focused on consolidating its structures and strengthening its grassroots mobilisation ahead of the elections.
“Whether the opposition is ready or not, we are preparing. Any competition requires robust preparation,” he said.
Morka also disclosed that the APC has concluded its ward, local government, and state congresses across the country, describing the exercises as largely peaceful and successful despite isolated disputes.
He noted that reconciliation mechanisms had been activated to address grievances arising from the congresses and ensure unity within the party.
On concerns about internal dissent and possible legal challenges from aggrieved members, Morka said such reactions are normal in competitive political processes and should not be misconstrued as instability.
He stressed that the APC remained united and focused on delivering on its mandate, adding that the party would campaign vigorously and seek a renewed mandate from Nigerians.
The APC spokesman further argued that the party’s recent electoral successes, including by-elections and area council polls, were evidence of growing public support.
He expressed confidence that the party would secure a decisive victory in 2027, while insisting that such a victory would be the result of hard work rather than entitlement.
“We are not taking anything for granted. We will campaign, persuade Nigerians and win big,” he said.
Morka also defended the policies of the Tinubu administration, particularly on fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange reforms, arguing that the measures were necessary to stabilise the economy.
He maintained that while the reforms may have caused short-term hardship, they were laying the foundation for long-term economic growth.
According to him, indicators show that inflationary pressures are easing and food availability is improving, even as he urged Nigerians to be patient with the administration.
He dismissed claims by critics that the economy is worsening, describing such narratives as politically motivated.
Morka further argued that the APC continues to attract members due to what he described as the party’s expanding capacity to deliver governance, adding that there is no constitutional limit to party membership.
He said the party would continue to open its doors to Nigerians willing to join, insisting that the APC remains committed to inclusivity and democratic engagement.
On internal party dynamics and the forthcoming national convention, Morka said there was no apprehension among party leaders, adding that preparations were ongoing to ensure a smooth and credible exercise.
He emphasised that the APC leadership was working to consolidate unity and strengthen its internal structures ahead of future political contests.
Reiterating the party’s position, Morka said the APC would approach the 2027 elections with seriousness and determination, dismissing any notion that the race would be a walkover.
“Anybody who says the 2027 election is a foregone conclusion is speaking for himself. As a party, we are working hard and will continue to do so,” he added.
