A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has alleged that several governors and top-ranking members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are secretly aligning with an emerging opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a revealing interview with TVC News, Lawal—who officially dumped the APC on June 29—said these influential figures, though still publicly loyal to the party, are covertly working to unseat President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“Yes, there are APC members working with the coalition, and they will speak for themselves. Some may not be bold like me, but many—governors included—have privately aligned with us,” Lawal declared.
According to the former SGF, the internal rot within the APC and disenchantment with Tinubu’s leadership style have driven many party insiders to seek political alternatives. He accused the party of suppressing dissent and discouraging constructive criticism.
“The APC has never been united. It’s a party where advice is seen as opposition. There is no internal democracy; members are bullied into silence,” he said.
Lawal also mocked the recent wave of defections to the APC, describing them as acts of desperation by politicians seeking to secure their political survival—not genuine ideological shifts.
“The governors are decamping to the APC because they know the president has already locked down the 2027 ticket. There will be no primaries. They’re just trying to stay relevant. But the people are not following them,” he said.
He pointed fingers at the APC for allegedly creating the political playbook of staying in one party while working for another, describing former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, as the “master of the template.”
He said, “I’m learning this from APC—the same script Wike has enhanced and grown beyond imagination. Wike is our leader in this type of politics.”
On the growing opposition coalition, Lawal clarified that it is not centered around any particular presidential hopeful, insisting it is a collective effort to oust what he called a “non-performing” government.
“The coalition is not about Atiku. I’ve attended meetings tilted towards Obi, Atiku, and Amaechi. Before we started, everyone with political ambition was told to lock it in a cupboard. One person alone cannot defeat an incumbent,” he said.
Lawal further justified the need for a coalition, saying the objective is to birth a government that better serves Nigerians.
“Many of us have been disappointed in Tinubu’s style of leadership or how he allows others to run his government. There’s nothing wrong if we decide to come together to make a change,” he said.
While refusing to name specific APC governors or leaders involved in the opposition alliance, Lawal maintained that disillusionment within the ruling party is widespread, and the coalition’s influence is growing quietly but steadily.
His comments are expected to rattle the ruling APC, especially amid growing public discontent over economic hardship and insecurity under the Tinubu administration.
The remarks also further underscore the shifting political alignments ahead of a highly anticipated 2027 electoral contest.
