2027: Atiku Faults PDP Governors Over Anti-Tinubu Coalition Rejection

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party for rejecting the formation of a broad-based opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The coalition, led by Atiku, expressed disappointment over the position of the PDP Governors’ Forum, which on Monday declared its opposition to the initiative aimed at uniting opposition forces against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress.

In a statement on Tuesday, the spokesman for the coalition, Salihu Lukman, said the governors were playing into Tinubu’s hands by frustrating efforts to build a viable opposition bloc.

“The coalition is a viable option not only for defeating the APC and President Tinubu but also for rescuing Nigeria’s democracy from imminent collapse,” the statement read.

Lukman accused the PDP of abandoning its role as the country’s leading opposition party, saying it had gone into “suspended animation” while the APC, under Tinubu, continued unchecked.

He also claimed that internal sabotage and the influence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, were part of a broader plan to weaken the PDP and prevent it from fielding a strong presidential candidate in 2027.

“Wike is not untouchable in Tinubu’s cabinet because of his performance, but because of his role in ensuring that the PDP cannot produce a candidate to challenge Tinubu,” he alleged.

He further stated that the PDP governors were now attempting to revive the party only to divide the opposition vote, describing their actions as a “spoiler game” that would ultimately favour the APC.

The coalition maintained that its movement remained committed to providing a credible alternative in the next general election, with or without the backing of the PDP governors.
