Former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has ruled out any return to the Aso Rock Villa, throwing her weight behind President Bola Tinubu and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Jonathan made the statement on Saturday night in Abuja while receiving the Women Icon Leader of the Year 2025 award presented by Accolade Dynamics Limited.
She used the occasion to express her unwavering commitment to the principle of rotational leadership, describing it as crucial to Nigeria’s unity.
“I believe in one president. I believe in turn-by-turn. When it’s your turn, I will support you. When it’s not your turn, step back—so that the country can move forward,” she said.
The event had in attendance Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of President Tinubu and Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, whom the former First Lady commended for championing women’s causes.
“I was supposed to call her first, but I saved her for last: the daughter of our wonderful President, the one and only we believe in — President Bola Tinubu. Iyaloja, thank you for standing with women. Carry them along; they are with you,” she said.
Recounting her longstanding relationship with the First Lady, Patience Jonathan said their bond predates their respective tenures in Aso Rock.
“I didn’t just know her because she’s the First Lady. We worked together as a group when I was a deputy governor’s wife, then as a governor’s wife.
“Even when my husband was Vice President, Oluremi stood with her husband and supported us during our first election,” she recalled.
She reaffirmed her loyalty to Senator Tinubu, declaring that any rumour of her returning to active politics or seeking a return to the presidency was unfounded.
“I stand by my friend. I told her I would campaign with her. I’m not denying her. I’m not running. I’m not going back to the villa. If you call me, I will not go,” she said, noting that she now enjoys peace of mind away from the pressures of public office.
Jonathan also lent her voice to the ongoing advocacy for 35 per cent affirmative action for women in politics, lamenting the National Assembly’s continuous rejection of gender equality bills.
“During Obasanjo’s time, we worked for it, and the Executive approved 35 per cent. My husband also maintained it.
“But when it comes to elective positions, the men dominate and shut us out. May God touch their hearts to understand that we are their mothers, sisters, and friends,” she said.
While accepting her award, the former First Lady dedicated it to the collective struggle of Nigerian women and the efforts made towards improving their health and economic development.
“I am deeply humbled to receive this prestigious Women Icon Leader of the Year 2025 award. I accept this honour not just as a personal recognition, but as a testament to the tireless efforts of countless women and men who have worked alongside me.”
