The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports that it has registered two new political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, said this on Wednesday in a statement he shared on the commission’s X handle.
There were some reports that INEC had registered the ‘Independent Democrats’ and ‘Peoples Democratic Movement’ to add to the existing 19 registered political parties in the country.

Daily Trust had reported that over 100 associations and interested groups had applied to INEC to be registered as political parties as part of the constitutional requirements to field candidates for elections in the country.
“The attention of the INEC has been drawn to a fake report making the rounds about the registration of two new political parties namely ‘Independent Democrats’ and ‘Peoples Democratic Movement’.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the commission has not yet registered any new party. The current number of registered political parties in Nigeria is 19. Nothing has been added,” Oyekanmi said.
He recalled that both the “Independent Democrats (ID)” and “People’s Democratic Movement (PDM)” were registered as political parties in August 2013, but were deregistered in February 2020 in accordance with Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He urged the public to disregard the said report.
