The Labour Party has dismissed speculations of entering into any coalition or merger arrangement ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that it will contest the polls as a standalone political platform.
The party’s position was made known by Ken Asogwa, Special Adviser to the Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, during an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday.
Asogwa said the party was not engaged in talks with any political party and had no intention of collapsing its structure into any alliance, insisting that it would build on its 2023 performance.
“In 2027, we hope to contest that election as a standalone political party,” he said.
“We participated in the 2023 election as a standalone political party and Nigerians trusted us with their votes. We gathered more than six million votes. It was a shocker to the nation.”
The Labour Party emerged as a major contender in the 2023 presidential election, recording over six million votes nationwide and finishing third behind the two dominant parties.
The outcome disrupted Nigeria’s traditional two-party dominance and significantly altered the country’s political landscape.
Asogwa acknowledged that internal and structural challenges contributed to the party’s inability to secure victory in 2023 but noted that steps were being taken to address those setbacks ahead of the next electoral cycle.
“There were some mistakes we realised that didn’t make us win that election. Some of those bottlenecks are being corrected now. So we believe that when those things are properly fixed, Labour Party will be in a position in the coming elections,” he added.
His comments come amid growing realignments and speculations of possible mergers among opposition parties seeking to challenge the ruling party in 2027.
However, the Labour Party’s latest stance signals its determination to consolidate its base independently rather than pursue coalition politics.
Political analysts say the party’s ability to maintain internal cohesion, expand its grassroots structure and retain voter enthusiasm will be critical to its prospects in the 2027 polls.
As preparations gradually gather momentum, attention is expected to shift to how the party resolves lingering leadership disputes and strengthens its national spread in the months ahead.
