As political permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections gather steam, activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has stirred the hornet’s nest with a bold claim that no Southern politician stands a chance of defeating President Bola Tinubu at the polls—except former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Adeyanju, in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, argued that the opposition’s most viable route to dislodging Tinubu would be through a Jonathan-Rabiu Kwankwaso joint ticket or a younger Northern candidate paired with Labour Party’s Peter Obi.
“No Southern candidate can defeat Tinubu except Goodluck Jonathan,” Adeyanju wrote, warning that any strategy that sidelines the youth vote could be a costly miscalculation.
He dismissed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s chances entirely, claiming Atiku has lost touch with the youth demographic and no longer holds the influence needed to energize the electorate.
Adeyanju’s remark has since sparked widespread debate across social media platforms, with political commentators and citizens alike dissecting the feasibility of his proposed political alliance.
While some Nigerians see Jonathan as a politically neutral figure who still commands considerable goodwill across the country, others argue that a return bid by the former President could further deepen existing regional and generational divides.
The former President, who handed over to President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 after a historic electoral defeat, has not declared any political ambition since leaving office.
However, his name has repeatedly surfaced in speculative conversations around consensus candidates for 2027.
As parties continue to strategize for the next general election, Adeyanju’s assertion is expected to shape ongoing discussions within opposition camps seeking to reclaim power from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
President Tinubu, who was elected in 2023, is widely expected to seek re-election, barring any political surprises.
