2027 Presidency: Buhari Not Plotting Against Tinubu — Garba Shehu

Amid rising political speculations ahead of the 2027 general elections, former presidential spokesman Garba Shehu has dismissed claims that ex-President Muhammadu Buhari is working against President Bola Tinubu or the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Shehu made the clarification on Saturday during an interview with Arise News, following the recent visit of some prominent opposition figures to Buhari’s Kaduna residence.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal had all met with Buhari in what many perceived as an early move to form a political alliance against Tinubu ahead of 2027.

Although El-Rufai publicly denied that the meeting had any political undertone, speculations intensified, especially within APC circles, with claims that Buhari may be backing a coalition aimed at unseating his successor.

But Shehu strongly refuted the notion, stating that Buhari remains firmly loyal to the APC and harbours no interest in undermining Tinubu or the party that gave him a historic opportunity to govern.

“President Buhari’s position was and still is that he’s an APC person. APC did him the biggest favour of his life — made him president for two terms,” Shehu said.

“He is not going to betray that party. President Tinubu is his successor from the same political party,” he added.

Highlighting the crucial alliance that brought Buhari to power, Shehu recalled how Buhari, after three unsuccessful attempts at the presidency, eventually won in 2015 following his coalition with Tinubu and other key political figures.

“President Buhari ran for office three times and didn’t win until they came together with Tinubu and all the others and they won,” he noted.

While political horse-trading ahead of the 2027 elections continues to stir the national space, Shehu’s statement appears to reaffirm Buhari’s loyalty to the APC fold and quash any suggestion of political betrayal.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that the build-up to 2027 has already begun in earnest, with opposition leaders exploring alliances and internal tensions simmering within the ruling party.
