A boat accident at Imore town in the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State has claimed the lives of at least 21 people, leaving 11 others with injuries.
The tragic incident occurred when two passenger boats collided in the middle of the lagoon, capsizing both vessels.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident in a press statement.
He revealed that the two boats, each carrying 16 passengers, crashed while traveling on the lagoon, leading to the fatal capsizing.
The police received a distress call about the accident around 7 pm, prompting an immediate response.
Emergency services, including marine police units and local divers, were quickly dispatched to the scene to carry out rescue operations.
According to Hundeyin, 11 injured passengers were pulled from the water and rushed to the Naval Hospital in Navy Town, Alakija, for urgent medical attention.
However, many passengers remain unaccounted for, raising concerns about further casualties.
Hundeyin assured the public that a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
“The marine police and other agencies are working hard to determine what led to this unfortunate incident and to recover any missing persons,” he stated.
This boat collision is the latest in a series of water-related tragedies that have plagued Lagos in recent years.
Authorities have consistently advised boat operators and passengers to adhere to safety guidelines, including wearing life jackets and avoiding overloading, in an effort to prevent such accidents.
However, despite these warnings, accidents on Lagos waterways continue to occur, often resulting in loss of life.
