A damning report released by the Murtala Muhammed Foundation has revealed that a decade after the abduction of 276 schoolgirls.
According to the report, among the 21 girls released, 34 children were born in captivity, underscoring the horrors of sexual violence and coerced marriages endured by the victims.
Tragically, 48 parents of the abducted victims have passed away since the girls were kidnapped, amplifying the psychological trauma experienced by survivors and their families.
The Chief Executive Officer of the MMF, Dr. Aisha Muhammad-Oyebode, outlined ten key recommendations aimed at addressing the underlying drivers of conflict and violence against women and girls.
Urging for enhanced security measures, community empowerment programmes, and psychological support services, the report underscores the need for concerted efforts from both the Nigerian government and the international community.
Despite the rescue of some girls and ongoing efforts, 91 schoolgirls remain unaccounted for, highlighting the persistent threat posed by groups like Boko Haram.
The report also reveals alarming parallels with the 2018 abduction in Dapchi, emphasizing the urgent need for proactive measures to prevent further atrocities.
In advocating justice, Dr. Muhammad-Oyebode emphasized the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes, including forced marriages and violations of human rights.
The report underscores the imperative of international cooperation in addressing the root causes of conflict and extremism, offering hope for a brighter future for the Chibok community and beyond.
